April 12, 201511 yr I am always surprised by how bad major league players are at bunting. It is hard for me to believe how frequently major league players fail. I sure would have liked to see a different angle on those bunt attempts by Phillips. It looked to me like he bunted at bad pitches. That being said, I know conventional strategy is to have Phillips bunt. However, with no outs and the go ahead run on second, I would have let him hit. I don't like giving up an out, especially with the way Rosenthal was struggling. Didn't we discuss this last year? What are the stats on scoring runs with sacrifice bunts with no outs versus hitting away with no outs?
April 12, 201511 yr I don't think I would've even given Rosenthal a strike by attempting a bunt. The way he was struggling with command I'd rather Phillips stand with the bat on his shoulder and make the pitcher throw him two strikes than attempt a bunt. Those bunt attempts were some of the only strikes he threw at all and I'm not sure even they were strikes.
April 12, 201511 yr The way they play against the Cards not surprising. The Cards know they are going to beat the Reds where the Reds hope they can beat them. After Reds took 5-3 lead, Cards came right in and immediately tied it up. No Panic in Cards dugout. The Reds believe they can beat the Cards. The way they came from behind in the 7th and took a 2 run lead shows there is no panic in the Reds dugout. Didn't the reds come back and beat the Cards late Friday night also? The problem isn't believing you can do it or panic. The problem is being able to do it. The Cards have the players that get the job done. The Reds don't. The Cards bullpen and hitters are better than the Reds bullpen and hitters.

Win Expectancy number is slightly higher in the bottom of the 9th with a runner on 2nd and 3rd and one out vs 1st and 2nd no outs. http://www.tangotiger.net/welist.html

The thing I will say though is that chart takes in every occurence. You have to factor in who is hitting and who is pitching - and how things are going at that time. In today's game, Rosenthal was all over the place. Phillips, Bruce and Byrd the next three hitters, I roll the dice and let them hit.
April 12, 201511 yr It was nice to see the lineup at least produce a little bit more balanced today. The 6 spot was a black hole though. Gregg should be cut right now, if he's on the team flight to Chicago I'll be really disappointed.

April 13, 201511 yr I think it is the manager's job to put his players in a position to succeed. Gregg had a 1-2-3 inning in the 10th with a whole slew of left handed batters coming to the plate in the 11th. Where was Manny Parra? If he is the lefty specialist then he should have faced wong, carpenter, heyward, and Matt Adams. Why have Gregg fac those leftys?
April 13, 201511 yr Price not happy with Heywards slide and promised retribution. Heyward came in late but I personally didn't think it was that bad.
April 13, 201511 yr Price not happy with Heywards slide and promised retribution. Heyward came in late but I personally didn't think it was that bad. I read Price was clear to say it was a dirty slide but Heyward was not a dirty player. Heyward supposedly apologized immediately.
April 13, 201511 yr BP has to get that SAC bunt down with no outs and 2 on. Cingrani is guilty of the same. Both are inexcusable.
April 13, 201511 yr Kevin Gregg should be released immediately after the game. :thumb: That was a joke from the start.
April 13, 201511 yr My attendance record falls to 2-1 on the short season. How Gregg is on a ML roster is beyond me.
