What would the Owensboro Red Devils record be if they played in the WNBA? Could they beat a WNBA team? Could they have a successful season in the WNBA? Would Justin Miller be stopped by any woman in the league? Can Aric Holman handle Britney Griner? Can Jacoby Harris put the clamps on Diana Taurasi? Taurasi is actually taller than Harris so she already has the edge in that matchup. Would Darion Morrow and Dylan Sanford be as effective against the WNBA as they were all season? Would Airius Phillips have a field day as the Sixth Man against WNBA? All great questions. Who knows the answers?

 

I’m going to go ahead and put them in the Eastern Conference and I’ll say that they would win 20 games in a 34 game WNBA regular season. Their biggest problems will come from the Phoenix Mercury and the Minnesota Lynx. Of course, they’d need to get adjusted to the travel that comes with professional sports. They’d probably also need to rein in their hormones the first few times they play these seasoned professionals. I mean let’s be honest, these are 15-19 year old boys were are talking about and when they face Maya Moore(Minnesota),Skylar Diggins(Tulsa) and Candace Parker(Los Angeles) I could see them taking it on the chin. Happily. They are only human. I can see them arguing now about who is going to guard Skylar Diggins. I’m thinking there will be a record number of defensive switches used on a pick and roll involving the impressionable Skylar Diggins.

There is one thing that concerns me about Owensboro’s chances. They play a mean zone defense and I’m not sure it would be allowed in the WNBA. Now, I’m sure they would adjust nicely to playing man to man, or man to woman defense, whatever you want to call it, I'm sure they’d be fine. It would be interesting to see how coaching comes in to play as well. Rod Drake has proven to be a great coach but can he coach in the pros? Would he be able to get his team ready to face a bunch of women ready to lay the smackdown on them on the court? It’s definitely possible and I think as they got more adjusted to the women’s game, the speed of the game and the women's ball I think they’d be fine. I mean, they’ll definitely be using a woman’s ball. No way around that one fellas.

 

I also think a lot of women would bully some of these boys. The way the saying goes is that women have larger egos than men but men’s egos are more fragile. This is possibly very factual. Put this dynamic on the court and add in the fact you’ll have women playing against young boys full of raging hormones and you have a powder keg of awesomeness. I'm actually getting more excited about these fictional games that will never happen. Think about it, you take these Sweet 16 champions and put them on the court with professional women and look at all of the logistics: size, skill, athleticism, coaching, mental fortitude……I’m all in. I need someone to make these games happen. I think Owensboro would start off loose and get their butts whipped the first four or five games. Then pride and ego would kick in and they'd get down to business.

 

Who can make this happen? I need the Owensboro Red Devils in the WNBA this summer so I can see if this experiment works. I need to see Aric Holman versus Britney Griner just to cure my curiosity. Who can help us out?

I have thought about this topic on several occasions -- not specific to Owensboro, but just comparing an above-average varsity boys' team to the WNBA.

 

A couple questions need to be ironed out before you can really have this conversation, though. What size basketball do you use? Is there a shot clock? Is there a 10-second backcourt violation in the WNBA? Any other differences between the two games?

This article just helped me increase my WNBA knowledge by at least 300%. I had no idea they only play 34 games, and that Tulsa has a pro sports team.

I go against the norm on this. I think that unless a HS Boys team has a height advantage or an elite player that an WNBA team would beat them more often than not. I've seen video of UT back in their heyday practicing against males and there were times the guys couldn't bring the ball up court against their pressure without turning it over.

 

I don't know what kind of size Owensboro has but unless they have an impossible matchup I think most WNBA teams would be alright with them.
