Very well could be why Boyle only won 5 in a row instead of 6. I believe Highlands began the platoon system in 2004.

 

It very well could be but there are so many variables each year and anybody can lay an egg at any time, if platooning is the only way to go then how come Highlands hasn't won 20 straight state championships?? I think that if they can play defense without Josey Coach Smith will do that but if he thinks his best chances to win are with him out there then you will see him on defense.

At Boyle you play with what you have at the time and hope for the best concerning injuries. I do hope Robins can get some rest this year on defense in one sided games. When he is your best all around athlete you have to have him on the field in critical situations. As far as the Boyle teams in the early 2000's they would not only compete now, but would still be winning big time.

Boyle County hasn't played at Highlands' level since 2003. IMO Boyle will not get back to the Highlands, Trinity, BG, St. X level without installing a platoon system. It's too hard to play and defeat teams that play at that level platooning their players. That's my whole point. And 3A this season and the next few years will be tougher than 4A was when Highlands came to 4A. Boyle would have a distinct advantage platooning players at the 3A level. I can't imagine many teams will be platooning at that level.

Boyle has the numbers also. It's not like there are only 40 kids playing football. I'd be shocked if there weren't enough kids to begin position development in the middle school years. You can't tell me that kids focusing on one position in middle school wouldn't be a tremendous benefit to the whole program in their high school years. Even the best programs may have an exceptional athlete or two that plays both ways but you're not going to convince me that playing 8 or more players both ways is a recipe for success come late November when you are playing teams that only play 2-4 players both ways. If they play that many.

 

Of course those 2000 teams would still be winning. They were superbly talented. When the natural talent and athleticism isn't walking through the hallways like it was then you can't or shouldn't expect that same kind of success if nothing changes.

Yes he did, and Duggins was one of the best linebackers in the state, but then again he was the BEST highschool QB I've ever seen play the game. Players like Jeff Duggins Come along once in a lifetime.

 

Brandon Smith was probably the best defensive player on the team his senior year. They didn't call him 'Bulldog' for nothing. But that's neither here nor there.

So let's stick to the 2015 Boyle County team.

 

No doubt Josiah is the best athlete on the team...that's not the debate. The debate is keeping off or limiting his time on defense due to fatigue. I'd say limit his time but do not keep him off completely. He is far too vital.

I think it's a big talent gap. Him playing both sides doesn't help. Look at the amount of big plays they gave up in those two games. You can look at the tape he was gassed and they were either making him sprint 40 yards down the field or forcing him to tackle in open space.

Are you saying that Boyles gonna beat Catholic so bad that the score is gonna get out of hand? Yes I'm being silly just like you IMO LC has lost more to graduation than Boyle did, and I think Boyle will be the favorite going in, but you know as well as I do that these games are always going to be a toss up. IMHO LC could end the season with 5 losses . I guess time will tell who's fooling who.

A couple of things to add:

 

1) Mason's base offense came from Pardue, ostensibly. The playcalling was considerably different, but still same sets, schemes, and names... The one exception is the bone package. That said, they have run A LOT more bone in the past few years and I am sure there have been other changes in terminology, pacing, etc. since Pardue was there last. So, in a sense, everyone is right. lol

 

2) Josiah Robbins is not the best athlete a Boyle... He is the best athlete in the area, period. I am sure Boyle would love to get him off the field, but the problem for Boyle is...

 

3) The drop-off between him and the next guy is going to be pretty precipitous. Boyle does not have many game-breakers. They play tough, fundamentally-sound, well-executed football - which will beat 95% of teams. They will not bowl anyone over with their athleticism. They have a good chance to win 3A, next season, but I think they have to find someone for Robbins to throw it to...
