Students at UC Irvine vote to ban American flag

Featured Replies

Six students out of 22,000 undergrads (.00027 percent of the student body) make a decision that only affects an office lobby where maybe 40-50 people pass through on a good day. And we're looking at a veto of this decision on Saturday by another group of students from the same campus. You tell me: What's this indicative of? What broad generalizations can we make here?

That it's still stupid!

These six are elected representatives of the student population and those who elected them would have similar views. It is encouraging that four reps did vote against the issue, but sad to think that two did not have leadership skills to vote yes or no. As to a generalization, just a generation ago this would not have happened. Even those who had disagreements with the government would not defile the flag, outside of a hater of America.

Removing all flags from the lobby area of an obscure campus office is hardly "defiling." Speaking of which, isn't flag burning as a form of protest protected free speech? Hasn't our senior senator from Kentucky spoken out in the past in support of this right? The answers to these questions are yes and yes.

To answer Hoops' question in post 11, all I'm arguing for is perspective. If Fox really wants to do an "outrage" story, look no further than the Region 9 tourney going on at B of K center at NKU. How many times now in the past three years has the national anthem on the memory stick or whatever failed to play? At least twice.

I would be interested to learn if a country flag is at each university in each of the countries represented by the the UC-Irvine student body. I bet the answer is yes. And I bet that no student group in those countries would ever even consider voting to remove the flag of the host country.

Your analysis is probably getting to the heart of the matter.

The thing that bugs me about this is that these students did not come up with these moronic statements on their own. What country in history has been more inclusive than the US? They were taught this garbage by professors. There is a whole bunch of garbage being thrown at our college students now by whack job professors and it is not just at this university...although the University of California is about as "out there" as it gets.

Keep posting TTP -- your true colors are shining through !

Have you looked into a mirror lately? You voted for Mitch. (See post 17.) I didn't.

And each time, the PEOPLE sang their hearts out. Technology fails. People don't.

Actually, the Dixie Heights band came to the rescue and played the national anthem at the game I attended two years ago.

Brainwashed!

At least six of them were...and probably many more.

Just more Liberal :poop:. God, this get old.

Brainwashed!

That is what I call what some of these high intellect, low common sense professors are doing to impressionable students.

First off, each and every person is responsible for their own actions! Period! I don't buy the proffesor garbage. You are talking about 6 people who made a decision. It won't go through anyway, it just won't happen. The overwhelming majority of their student body are against this, as is the powers to be at UC - Irvine.

Those voting to ban the flag are morons but I'm really not surprised. I just don't get it, if I'm in another country i don't feel excluded by the flag display of my host country.
