Students at UC Irvine vote to ban American flag

Featured Replies

Students at the University of California, Irvine have voted to make their school a more “culturally inclusive” place by banning the American flag.

The Associated Students of University of California (ASUCI) passed a resolution March 3 that would remove the Stars & Stripes along with every other flag from the lobby of a complex housing the offices of the student government.

The 6-4 vote was to ban the display of all flags in the common lobby area of the student government offices, a move which likely be vetoed on Saturday. We ain't talking about banning just Old Glory from the basketball arena or the student union, for cryin' out loud. If you're going to get your knickers in a wad about unAmerican students, no doubt there are better stories for Fox to feign outrage.

Isn't great that you live in a country where real men and women are willing to defend such a stupid move? The removal of all flags is just a cover to get rid of the American flag. I would think that no matter what your politics might be, one could come to the defense of Old Glory. Living in many other parts of the world would get shot walking down the street, beheaded or burned alive.

Take a 12+ hour flight across the west coast pond if they don't like it and go to school somewhere.

Six students out of 22,000 undergrads (.00027 percent of the student body) make a decision that only affects an office lobby where maybe 40-50 people pass through on a good day. And we're looking at a veto of this decision on Saturday by another group of students from the same campus. You tell me: What's this indicative of? What broad generalizations can we make here?

Are we suppose to ignore?

It shouldn't matter if the flag is in a office where 50 people go by, the American Flag should not ever be banned out of respect for anyone. We live in America.

Those 6 people need the flag and flag pole stuck up where the sun don't shine and sent to another country.

I would be interested to learn if a country flag is at each university in each of the countries represented by the the UC-Irvine student body. I bet the answer is yes. And I bet that no student group in those countries would ever even consider voting to remove the flag of the host country.

Think about the ignorance of your statement and then equate it to race. If the same percentage of students did something that was blatantly racist, but wasn't seen by too many people, then that is okay??? C'mon.

These six are elected representatives of the student population and those who elected them would have similar views. It is encouraging that four reps did vote against the issue, but sad to think that two did not have leadership skills to vote yes or no. As to a generalization, just a generation ago this would not have happened. Even those who had disagreements with the government would not defile the flag, outside of a hater of America.
