That is what I would have thought.

 

The lone state championship was won in 1939 when the school was Brooksville HS.

 

But this may be correct.

The KHSAA website lists it as won by Brooksville/Bracken Co.

 

I struggle with knowing when history is carried over and when it starts new.

Allen County-Scottsville is much the same situation as Warren Central is. Both schools absorbed another in consolidation but did not move their physical building at the time. Both maintained the same mascot and colors. Personally, I don't consider them the same school when this process happens. I'm a bit more inclined to see the schools as unchanged if their name changes when they have another school split off of them, as in the Jessamine County case. South Laurel is another, where it was Laurel County, they changed to South Laurel when North Laurel was created, but everything else stayed the same.

 

As for changes where literally nothing changed but the name, Clinton County (Albany), Cumberland County (Burkesville), and Metcalfe County (Edmonton) all simply changed from the city name to the name of their county with no change in anything else.

I would guess Allen Co and Allen Co-Scottsville are considered seperate schools, but I couldn't find that information for sure.

I went to Bracken for the first time this season, and I loved seeing the letter jacket (maybe even a wee bit more than seeing the polar bear).

I haven't been to a game at South Laurel in several years so it might not be this way now, but after North and South were split, South still had all the old Laurel County championship pictures hanging in their gym. I guess the theory was you needed them somewhere and South Laurel High School is the old Laurel County High School building, but in the record books they are two distinct schools.

I say they claim it. They were known as their current nickname, I believe. They were drawing kids from the county, except for Augusta, just like today. In the old lobby at the old Bracken gym, the 1939 trophy, net, and various pictures were displayed prominently. I don't remember if there was a letter jacket or sweater, but it was a long time ago the last time I visited.

Yes. The only public high school in Winchester, Kentucky, George Rogers Clark High School opened in the fall of 1963, consolidating the Clark County High School and Winchester High School locally referred to as county high and city high respectively. The school has a strong record in athletics, celebrating state championships in numerous sports. The boy's basketball team (County) won the 1951 Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) state title under head coach Letcher Norton.

Clark County lost in the semifinals of the state tournament in 1950, but much like this year’s team who had lost to Mason County in the regional final two straight years, the 1951 team used that as motivation the following year to make a run in the tournament.

The experienced Cardinals beat Louisville Manual 45-44 in the semifinals — the team that had eliminated them the previous year on a last second shot — then beat Cuba High School in the finals 62-45.

So gracious of them to "allow" girls to attend. Actually, the school became Newport Central Catholic after OLP (Our Lady of Providence) closed its doors and the Diocese merged the all boys and all girls schools together. Merged sounds so much better, doesn't it?!

As someone completely in the dark on Catholic schools, can you explain the difference between a parish school and a district school? I often see St. Henry listed as St. Henry District but don't see that with any other Catholic schools in northern Kentucky or Louisville.

 

I don't believe I can explain the difference; however, I do believe Covington Holy Cross is a district high school as well and have heard it called that before.

In 1945-46, it was Brooksville. In 1946-47, Bracken County.

It's silly the way the KHSAA lists Laurel and South Laurel as separate schools and separate state championships on their website when both are located in the same school building and both are Cardinals. I can't for my life see why the Laurel system didn't simply leave Laurel County as it was, and not add South to the name. Then, simply call the new school North Laurel. That would make more sense.

But the KHSAA listing the basketball titles as separate championships is puzzling.
