February 23, 201511 yr I watched the whole show too and I absolutely agree on the Sound of Music medley. I was prepared to grumble about it and Gaga knocked it out of the park. She absolutely blew me away with her performance. She is extremely talented.
February 23, 201511 yr I never watch awards shows of any type, just not interested. I catch up on who won the following day if I'm interested.
February 23, 201511 yr OK this one was uploaded to YouTube by the Oscars so it shouldn't be taken down. [video=youtube_share;Y2KSOeLXIzo]http://youtu.be/Y2KSOeLXIzo
February 23, 201511 yr What does everyone think of Doogie Houser coming on stage halfway through the show dressed only in his Fruit of the Looms underwear? That was a little over the top imo.

Apparently that was a tribute to Birdman where Michael Keton did a scene similarly clothed. I haven't seen the movie so I don't know and I was totally lost during it. Also a bit of a tribute to Whiplash as well.
February 23, 201511 yr Surprised no one has mentioned Sean Penn's comment about the green card. When he first said it, I thought "Whoa!" But to see the embrace he gave the director when he came up on stage just a few seconds later, makes me feel he had absolutely no ill will behind the comment, but was just trying to make a smart-aleck comment.
February 23, 201511 yr I didnt watch the Oscars but heard something about the results that makes me think the entire things a fraud . American Sniper won its only award for " best sound editing " and quite frankly I though the audio was HORRENDOUS in this otherwise great film. I mean so bad it took away from the experience . I admit I dont hear the greatest but when my sharp eared' wife cant hear whats being said I know its bad . And my brother said the same thing " couldnt enjoy the film because of the terrible sound " And its only award is best sound editing . Must be hollywood further sticking it to Sniper .
February 23, 201511 yr I love watching the Oscars and can remember watching them as far back as 1962. I haven't missed many years since then. But I lost a lot of confidence in the Academy voters when a movie such as "Shakespeare In Love" beat out "Saving Private Ryan" for Best Picture in 1999. There was no contest imo between which of those movies was the best, and some have questioned whether Harvey Weinstein used his power and infulence to win the prize. Supposedly "Saving Private Ryan's" director Steven Spellberg didn't personally campaign for his movie to win Oscars. There's been other head scratchers as well, such as in 1983 when the yawner "Ghandi" (who most people have probably never seen and if they did fell asleep halfway through it) beat out the entertaining "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial", which I consider a classic. But these are just my opinions. I realize people have different taste. But I did rent "Shakespeare In Love" to see what I was missing and to be honest, I didn't care much about the movie. I don't even know how it got nominated.

I liked American Sniper; it simply wasn't as great as some of the other movies this year. Birdman was perhaps over-praised but it was really good as were Whiplash, Boyhood and Grand Busapest Hotel.

There have been stretches where the Academy has done well and stretches where they haven't. The English Patient, Gladiator, and Crash all immediately spring to mind as movies not worthy of the accolades given to them by the voters.
February 23, 201511 yr Not having watched...what was the reasoning for bringing out the Sound Of Music medley? Fun Fact: There are several Cov Cath and Notre Dame Academy yearbook pictures from a good number of years back of a young CWB in costume playing Friederich Von Trapp in their joint production of The Sound Of Music.
February 23, 201511 yr Author Takes me back to my Film Lit class back in the day. I seem to remember that "Citizen Kane" was maybe one of the first truly great movies to be snubbed at Oscar time. Seems William Randolph Hearst wasn't real happy with the way he was (allegedly) portrayed. And maybe Hollywood wasn't ready to crown a 25 year-old king.

I always think about how The Color Purple went 0-fer after being nominated in 11 categories.
