Walmart is doing what?

Featured Replies

Our "cesspool of knowledge" discussed this in the lunchroom today. One guy offered that he read the increases were to combat increased turnover rates caused by a tightening labor market. If this is the true case, it is an obvious consequent of labor supply/demand. Also mentioned is that some of the extra compensation is recompense for reduced hours (and reduction in labor and benefit costs) brought about by the AHCA. Similar dynamic..harder to get people to accept the 32 hour max at a lower wage rate. In both cases, the company can quantify the benefit. Reduced turnover reduces recruitment, training, indirectly absenteeism - all of which allow for an increase in productivity. This situation could be a win/win.

I don't think there are any of us that don't want to see people better themselves. I just think there is a different opinion over how people should get that extra money. (Or maybe a better way to say that is what can we expect to be the result of the extra wage cost?)

Leave it to BGP to turn a story about people getting raises into a negative. Solid work.

There are two sides to every story, whether its the fun side to talk about or not.

When you guys go into a business to do your thing, do you ever pay attention to the employees? What what they do, how they do it, how they interact? As a former business owner I do, in fact back in the day, I had a supplier I stopped doing business with because of things I noticed about the employees they had working for them.

I do, I really appreciate it when I see someone doing a good job. Especially when no one is around them to supervise.

In addition to the wage increases WM is also allowing sick days to be used the first day an employee is sick. Currently, you have to be sick 2 days before being allowed to use your sick day and the first day has to be a personal day. They are also allowing earlier entry into the 401k program. All of this is an attempt to improve employee morale with the goal of better service and better stores.

This will cost WM $1B annually.

2014 revenue was about $413B.

For some reason, Walmart gets more criticism than any other company on Earth for how it pays its employees. Is there any other company you can think of where if it raised wages for its employees, people would be complaining that its prices would go up?

I think it is GREAT that Walmart has raised its wages for its employees and done the other things Clyde mentioned above. The REASON it is great is that WALMART decided it made good business sense to do this, NOT because some bozo congressman in Washington decided that Walmart had to. If Walmart does indeed raise prices because of the wage increases and you don't like it, it is simple, don't shop there...

One thing that doesn't get mentioned is that Walmart CEO's going back several years have supported raising the Minimum Wage, but didn't do it on there own because their competitors would have still been paying less, thus placing them at a competitive disadvantage.

I'm glad they did this on their own.

Any of this pay increase related to an increase in union organizing?

None that I've heard of

I guess I understand this, but there are many workers at Walmart that dont deserve this for the services they provide. Thats my biggest issue with the Minimum Wage increase discussion. Many of those workers who would get the increased wages, don't deserve it for the services they provide, they are bad employees, hence why they have said job to begin with.
Are you the one that determines if they are bad employees are not ? What unmitigated chutzpah !
I agree that many of the people may not seem to deserve a raise. It's easy to find quality applicants when your offering a job where they work M-F 8-5 with little to know manual labor.

It's much harder to hire the quality of employees that you want when the job is to be available to be scheduled any day of the week, 2nd or 3rd shift with manual labor a part of every job. Plus 97% of the jobs require you to be on your feet for the entire shift except for breaks.

I have hired probably has many or more people than anyone on BGP, trust me it's harder than you think to find good people for entry level jobs like you have at Walmart, McDonalds, Cracker Barrel and others.

I really just wanted to second this. I've been involved and in charge of hiring individuals for a less than exceptional position, several times. It's not hard to get applicants. Now, getting someone who can spell, bathe, interact with other functioning humans, show up consistently is a much different thing.

I'm not even going to try and act like I've hired multitudes of people, not even close to it. But the times I've been involved in the process are enough for me to know that I don't want to do that for a living.

A "hard" job that doesn't pay extremely well, have great hours and/or great benefits isn't going to attract many MENSA members.

Now you've gone and done it - intimating that the AHCA has played a part in a significant wage increase for half a million people. Next thing you know, folks will be calling you a wealth redistributor.

And heck - many of them are as socially awkward an inept as they come.

But don't forget it was in response to reduced hours and benefits resulting from AHCA.
