February 23, 201511 yr Oh, I didn't forget. Just found it ironic. I am just passing on the opinions from around the lunch table. My guess is that Walmart may be having trouble retaining their better entry level employees so the raise is to retain them. The situation can be a result of many things. One is that government support has become more lucrative, and when I ran a car wash, it was more beneficial for some to take government assistance and then work under the table somewhere else. ( I wouldn't do that). The underground economy is thriving, and it makes it harder for legal employers to keep workers. Two, there has been some improvement in the labor market since the 2009 crash, and the labor marke is tighter. Either way, Walmart probably finds it more beneficial to pay a higher wage than to experience the turnover....plus they get some PR mileage from the simpletons.....er. liberals.
February 23, 201511 yr Author Unfortunately this will have little to no impact on getting more registers open. The only impact would be if you get better employees due to better pay that in turn have better attendance. Call-ins on snow days, sunny Saturdays and Sundays are a big part of the problem with staffing levels...especially true with cashiers. Walmart did some test during Christmas in which they guaranteed every register open on Saturday and Sunday between 11-8 or something like that. Walmart analyzes stuff like that to the Nth degree. If the extra spent payroll and resources provided a significant ROI I think they will expand that to more weekends in the future.
February 24, 201511 yr In addition to the wage increases WM is also allowing sick days to be used the first day an employee is sick. Currently, you have to be sick 2 days before being allowed to use your sick day and the first day has to be a personal day. They are also allowing earlier entry into the 401k program. All of this is an attempt to improve employee morale with the goal of better service and better stores. This will cost WM $1B annually. 2014 revenue was about $413B. That's great. :thumb:
February 27, 201511 yr On a similar vein of employers activities reflecting market conditions, I wonder how long Toyota will be able to run on a very large temporary work-force....or maybe they pay so much, the temps. don't care.
