February 20, 201511 yr Wal-Mart will give pay raises to half a million employees Discount retail giant Wal-Mart will give half million employees pay raises, the company announced Thursday. The move ensures hourly associates earn at least $1.75 above today's federal minimum wage, or $9.00 per hour, in April. By Feb. 1, 2016, current associates will earn at least $10.00 per hour.
February 20, 201511 yr Author How are they deciding which half a million get the raise? Those below the new levels...contrary to popular belief most Walmart employees make more than you think. This will only impact newer employees.

February 20, 201511 yr Author Well, I'm glad for the newer employees, but I wonder how much and if it will affect the price of their goods. After cost of goods, payroll is the biggest expense. But I think it would have a negligible impact on prices at least to begin with.
February 20, 201511 yr I guess I understand this, but there are many workers at Walmart that dont deserve this for the services they provide. Thats my biggest issue with the Minimum Wage increase discussion. Many of those workers who would get the increased wages, don't deserve it for the services they provide, they are bad employees, hence why they have said job to begin with.

Maybe the higher wages will raise the service standards of the employees----where each employee will be under more scrutiny. Wages like that will entice more people to want to work there, allowing Walmart to be choosy.

However, you are right, it may lure a higher qualified employee. But at the end of the day, how does that help the person that no longer has the job? Economically the effect will be a requirement for higher efficiency out of the employees, and/or higher prices to customers and/or lower profits (then a lower income tax liability). There is no action without a consequence.
February 20, 201511 yr Leave it to BGP to turn a story about people getting raises into a negative. Solid work.
February 20, 201511 yr Leave it to BGP to turn a story about people getting raises into a negative. Solid work. What is negative abour facts and consequences? I don't work for Walmart, but I shop there a lot, but if prices go up, maybe not so much anymore unless there is an extra service I value that will now be provided OR their competition raise their prices as well. Then all this "good news" isn't so good for me or any of the other customers OR the people that got the raises because they have to pay more too.
February 20, 201511 yr Leave it to BGP to turn a story about people getting raises into a negative. Solid work. I just heard of a woman that got $115 of free merchandise at Walmart. We should all be so happy for her!!!! Oh, BTW, she was drunk and on drugs and shoplifted it...lead a police chase down the wrong lane of the highway hitting two cars head-on requiring helicopter transport to the hospital. Oh...guess I turned that good story in to bad news. Give me a break...

If they are too high you don't shop there. That's the beauty of competition. Pretty simple. I just heard of a woman that got $115 of free merchandise at Walmart. We should all be so happy for her!!!! Oh...guess I turned that good story in to bad news. Give me a break... Are those two things the same? Good grief. People get raises for a job they are already doing, which has little to no impact on everyone else (besides potentially raising prices of items you can get at multiple stores). Drunk lady on drugs steals merchandise and causes an accident with injuries. Ridiculous.

What increase in service will Walmart and/or their customers get from the increased wages?
