That's not true for everyone. I've paid less when having mine prepared by someone as opposed to Turbo Tax. I always hated the price Turbo Tax would say it costs and how much it actually cost after you finished on Turbo Tax. I'd much rather pay someone else to do it if the cost is the same or less.

 

Just the processing and printing fees are generally more expensive than Turbo Tax if you have them done by a firm. Obviously not true everywhere, but in most instances it hold true.

I haven't noticed any difference in the cost since I made the switch to having experts doing my taxes and the last two years it has been cheaper not using Turbo Tax. I hate Turbo Tax. Hate it.

I'm sure that is the case sometimes but like Clyde said for about 80% of people it's really simple to do and the accountant I used to have do them charged me $200-$250 and my return isn't hard. Seems a bit crazy for something I did in 30 minutes. I can do TT for less than $100.

What? Your taxes would take 10 minutes to do.

 

1) I have no idea how to do my taxes.

2) There is quite a bit I have to file for with multiple jobs, school, bank stuff and what not.

3) My fee with the tax preparer is not very expensive.

I hear you. We all have things we pay others to do. Mine is plumbing.

I do them myself using TurboTax. It makes me feel like I got something of value from that college Accounting minor. I also own a business, so I have to fill out a Schedule C. No big deal, because I keep good records throughout the year by the Schedule C expense category so it is a snap to enter the numbers into the software later.

I did my own by hand until last year. Once I got married and we took on all the school loans for the wife to go to med school I decided it was time to have them prepared for me. I go the local independent route.

I've always done my own. I got a free version of Tax Cut (H&R Blocks software) and I've been using it ever since. It takes me about 1 hour to do mine and besides my regular job, I have two paid coaching positions, a small business and my wife is self employed. Two of kids also work. Tax Cut costs me $80 (I get the premium + business version) plus $20 to file the state. I can't imaging doing taxes by paper anymore, unless you are just a kid with a part time job.

I've always done my own. This is probably the last year. Time is money and I'll gladly pay to spend some time in March being able to do actual work instead of going through all my dumb business expenses and figuring out everything. I keep all my records through computer accounting software and and I've already hired someone to start managing tax things for 2015. Between quarterlies and the annoyance of filing for the end of the year, I'm about sick of it all.
