If Votto puts up the numbers I mentioned, he's worth every bit of his contract IMO. McCutchen made $4.5 million in 2013. In 2018 (his last year with the Pirates), he'll earn $14.75 million.

He had gotten better each year and was just the MVP. He was looking for a big contract, and probably would have left rather than just sign a 3 or 4 year deal. If the Reds would have let him go, people would be complaining how we never go for it when we have a chance. Well the Reds went for it and to go for it locking him up was one of the keys. Has it worked out nope, but I don't know how people can try to act like it was something that at the time was a bad deal. It was something that looked like a great deal at the time, and something that looked like it put the Reds in a position to truly play for Championship for the next few years after the deal was signed. I for one much rather them go for it, rather than play for the future like I had to see from 96 all the way until 2009 or so.

Show me one that worked out to be a good deal other than maybe Derek Jeter's and I think they paid him more for services rendered than future play.
