January 30, 201511 yr This may mean that the Bengals now won't go offensive line in round 1 and maybe even round 2 of draft, depending how highly they think of this giant. Most of the mocks I've seen have them going D-line in first round, but one or two penciled in offensive tackle. Why did this mean they won't go for an offensive lineman in the 1st or 2nd round now? I believe teams can sign up to 90 or something guys to their team during the off season. So not a real surprise they are adding people. They do this every year, just a lot of times it goes unnoticed unless someone like Guru post it on here haha.
January 30, 201511 yr Which is why I am really curious what the Bengals do in FA. I do agree this lessens the chance of going OT early and hopefully means we will address our defensive issues first. Completely disagree that it lessons the chances. With the Bengals picking 21st there may or may not even be a tackle to take that is worthy of that pick there. I much rather the Bengals keep with the recent draft philosophy than reach for an offensive tackle in the 1st round who may not deserve to go there. If there is one that deserves to get picked there, then I say the chances of them picking him are exactly the same as they were before they signed this guy.

Adding people and pulling someone out of their professional job are a little different in my book. Besides, I had to be preemptive before spindoc figured this transaction out.

I want to see what they do in FA first but I still stick by this lessens the chance. Of course if you apply the best player available strategy then it wouldn't matter if they signed ten tackles.
January 30, 201511 yr What the Bengals definitely do not need are any more "projects" ... like Hunt and Clarke. Let's hope O'Donnell is ready to compete for a starting job.

Which them going best player available strategy has been their strategy and why their drafts have been so much better the last few years. They use to reach for players to fit needs, and well we know how they went. I don't see them changing their drafting strategy that has worked lately, they will go for best player available IMO. Which means this signing means nothing IMO.
January 30, 201511 yr I wonder how Winston graded out. FA will tell us a lot about the Bengals thoughts when they look in the mirror. I honestly thought Winston looked pretty good. However maybe it was just was because Newhouse looked so bad, that anyone looked good compared to him. However I kind of hope they sign him back and still draft a tackle.
January 30, 201511 yr I don't care if the Bengals sign guys off the LA KISS arena team... So long as it truly makes them better. They need depth everywhere.
January 31, 201511 yr I don't see how this hurts. They obviously have needed help on the o-line for the past two seasons. Drafted a center last year. Right tackle was a mess this year after Smith went out. Whitworth is 33? 34? If this allows them to draft a WR or DE in round 1, good deal.
January 31, 201511 yr Don't think this is anymore than getting the best 90 in camp they think they can. I would be shocked if they go big name in free agency and they will take the best available at 21 but QB IMO. They need help at OT, DT, DE, LB, WR, TE. If they sign Boling back they should be good on interior OL, if not, they have to think about that also. They have plenty of cap room, but they will pay big to sign Green, which they will. No choice on that one. I believe if they drafted need it would be DT before OT.

Teams sign up to 90 guys in the off season. Remember they only have 60 including practice squad when season ends. So that's 30 more guys teams usually sign in the off season to have workout with them. There has been many other guys they have added since their playoff game. These kinds of signings have no impact on free agency or who they draft.
