January 27, 201511 yr I'm a Meso fan and think that it is a great deal. I hope they can get a similar deal done for Frazier as well.
January 27, 201511 yr I hope my merit increase is the same as his. he made $525,000 last year. Nice bump! Congrats to Meso. I love his game.
January 27, 201511 yr Well hopefully this signing is still looked at as a good signing after a few years. Seems like every signing by the Reds that locks up our own players is talked up as a good signing at first. Then a year or two later is talked up as being as stupid signing. So hopefully this one works out much better.
January 27, 201511 yr If he continues to progress, that's going to be a bargain the next couple seasons. Agreed. It's not terrible even if he declines just a little from last year and flattens out. If he improves again it's a great deal for the team.

BP's contract before he got into his upper 20's was great. Bruce's deal I would have done too if I was them. Homer's deal is probably just a tad higher than he's actually worth on the market. The bigger problems have been the Marshall, Ludwick, Broxton deals and guys that are older. Mesoraco's deal may end up awful, but it's not an awful idea.

If by higher, you mean less than he could've gotten had he hit free agency, I agree. Agree with everything else.
January 31, 201511 yr Good deal! I hope he plays like the first half of year and not the second. Same for Hamilton and Frazier

I am just sick of hearing people saying they really like how the Reds locked the guys up. Then a year or two later, they turn around say the Reds were dumb giving those contracts. For me I thought it was a great deal to lock up Votto. He was a MVP and looked like he would be at that level for years. Once again the Cincy curse hit and once we sign someone they get hurt and they are not the same. The Bruce deal I liked, the BP deal was ok, and honestly the Homer deal was another one a lot of people said they liked and now say its a bad deal. Have those deals worked out for us? Nope however at the time they were smart deals IMO.
February 1, 201511 yr They seem stupid because most of the players suck after signing. Agreed they seem stupid. However no one knows how things will turn out after a person signs. However at the time of the deals, most of them seemed like good deals and deals they had to make IMO. We talk about how we want our franchises to show that they want to win. Well if we don't lock those guys up at those times, people would then complain how the Reds owners are not trying to win. It just sucks that after the fact it hasn't worked out. It seems like its a Cincinnati curse in all sports. When we have talented guys, as soon as we lock them up something happens like injuries and they are never the same. So frustrating!
February 1, 201511 yr The Votto deal was NEVER smart IMO...and I said so at the time. I cannot remember a 10 year contract for any player in baseball ever working out well for the team. Correct me if I am forgetting one. The Votto deal is especially bad for a team with limited financial resources like the Reds. The Yankees can afford a bad long term expensive deal but the Reds cannot. I wish the Reds did not lock up Bailey for so long because it forced them to deal Latos, who is frankly much better. I do admit that the Reds got a very bad break in that Votto seems to be very fragile. Some guys are injury prone and slow healers and Votto seems to be one of them. I am not sure about his mental state either.

February 1, 201511 yr ...and the Sox can afford to whiff on a long term deal too with their resources... That deal did work for the Sox...multiple WS rings
