Spring Break and Missing Games

Featured Replies

Why not do what some teams are doing and go to Florida for a tournament? Parents can come and make it a vacation and the whole team will bond. Might be a little expensive, but if you do it every other year or so, it is something for the JV to look forward to.

Take a look at the programs that allow their kids to go on spring break and a look at the programs that dont. Allowing players to go spring break reflects the true mentality of the program.

True dat!!!

I will say one thing, if 4 week-ends are eating you up that you did not spend with gramps, then you need to quit blaming baseball for taking it up. THE LESSON HERE FOR young people, now and future, is with all your "down time" you should visit and talk, go places and shop with them, see if they need anything, call them up. There are 365 days in the year and if you neglect them don't shove guilt-trips on the rest of athletes.

Commitment is one very important word in anyones life. A child must be made to commit if he/she is part of a team. No excuses for missing other than a death in the family or illness/injury. Otherwise how can anyone be punished. If you miss work for another reason, you will probably be fired.

I'll leave this alone so I don't get suspended...

Not necessarily, there are other reasons a employee can miss work and not be fired.

It's called being able to pick when you want to vacation. Not an option in HS...

Commitment seperates the have and have nots.

I think that more variables need to be put into this argument. First off, spring break is usually early in the baseball season. What if a parent comes to the coach well before the season starts and explains that the family is planning vacation during this week? In my opinion, as long as the student/athlete has been dedicated, and the family agrees to the coaches stipulation (extra conditioning/suspended games etc.) what is wrong with letting them go. This can also be the case in Basketball and football, especially early in the year. I do know it is not uncommon for families to plan trips during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Now I realize there has to be some differences made between the sports, I mean football only plays 10 reg. season games, while baseball teams often play 30, but if the parents and player handle the situation correctly, I don't see why they can not work it out with the coach. On the other hand, if the kid comes up two days before spring break and says he is going on vacation, I would have a problem.

When you choose to play a team sport you are making a commitment to your teammates and coach. If you miss part of the season you are letting the team down. If your not going to take the team seroiously than you should quit and go play church league softball or something on that level.

Bingo.

I spent 4 years of spring break following my son around while my wife and daughter spent those weeks on a beach in Florida. There was not even a second guess on my part because i was the one that put the baseball in his hand when he was a youngster. My son loved the game and would never ever have considered missing games for a beach vacation.I just dont understand how as a parent when you have made a commitment to the team and your child that you would even consider taking a break.I looked at it like this.He was only going to be playing this for 4 years and that beach will be there forever and he felt the same way.We both missed the beach but i wouldnt have traded those 4 weeks of vacation for anything else. When you make the commitment do yourself a favor and stick to it your child will learn something from it.Nuff said:irked:

I agree, this is put as plain as you can put it. This is the best post on here along with Strike3's comment. Well said fellas.

Alot of them do go play softball. :D

I did not say those things in a mean spirit. I sincerely mean it for young people to stop, take a look at how you spend the "extra time" outside of your activities. This is where most time is killed and can never be resurrected. Do not be sold on the idea you can sell your teamates out by neglecting season preparation on the text of family time. When we all look back, we can see blocks of time that we used for other purposes after our "team time" that left family out.
