I missed 4 like I said. While those four weekends were fun as a kid that's a part of a team, looking back they were nowhere close to being with my quickly declining number of family members. SB with friends on the beach? No way. Time spent with family? I don't think I need to answer...

 

If you're telling me its your only chance to see your grandparents, go right ahead . You would be making the right life choice.

 

That life choice, though, would be INSTEAD OF being on the team. As the baseball coach, I would fully respect your choice.

I always wanted to be on teams, and as a life long sports fan, Grandpa was OK with that. This is a man that was on his death bed for 6 days, and wouldn't let go untill he heard one final Opening Day on the Radio. Reds win, and he was gone within the hour. That was the one 4 days that everyone in the family was in the same place at the same time. I had to make a choice. I did. Now I'm not so sure it was a good idea. Knowing I would have to let the Season go to make the trip kept me home. Sounds like a great lesson to be teaching our youth...

He wasn't sick then. He passed 4 years ago, so HS wasn't the problem. The missed time spent with him over a few early season games and practices doesn't seem so wise as I grow older...

Hell, GT, you can say ANYTHING you did instead of spending time with family was a bad choice in hindsight.

I guess it boils down to Today being the worst day of the year for me. I'm done...

I understand. To me there are two different baseball players. One who is really serious about it and wants to play AABC traveling baseball. Under the impression that his "vacations" will be tournaments that he goes to. Not much "beach" or "leisure" time but you're still on a psuedo-vacation. Then, there's the casual baseball player that has all summer to take a vacation. Or Christmas break or Thanksgiving break or a long weekend during the school year. My thing is, make the choice. Should a say Senior miss Prom or graduation because a coach schedules games on those days? I think not. But......... alot of coaches schedule games on both days. Tough choice .

I will make a distinction between prom/graduation and spring break. Prom/graduation are part of the high school experience and each are a school sponsored event.

 

I never understand why coaches cannot simply schedule around them.

I tend to agree with gametime, but to put the shoe on the other foot, I heard of a area baseball coach that went on family vacation during spring break after his team and their parents had asked to do spring training in FL. Who let whom down this time?

Take a look at the programs that allow their kids to go on spring break and a look at the programs that dont. Allowing players to go spring break reflects the true mentality of the program.
