Spring Break and Missing Games

Featured Replies

That's why I say if it is such a problem during those time periods then don't schedule any games.

Don't play baseball. The team plays during the break, if you can't be there, you are letting your team down. No one said you can't go on vacation, you can't go on vacation AND play baseball. That's what I tell players.

I agree with nwo here If you have several players that go somewhere on spring break. Christmas break is another thing though.

What if it was the team's best player?

My entire family and all of our close friends have a vacation every year for the last 25 years on Labor Day weekend. I had to make the choice to miss four of them in HS because of sports. Looking back, I sure am glad I missed those four extra weekends with my Grandpa...

Better yet, don't play baseball. You're wasting your time and the coaches. What will kids do on spring break? We'll leave that alone but what I can guarantee you is that it won't have anything to do with baseball.

To put this into baseball terms. You work from February 15th until spring break to get kids arms, legs, mind and eyes in baseball shape yet you should give them a week off in the middle of it? Sorry, NO WAY.

Another part of it, if you don't schedule games over spring break and you try to get a couple of games in before spring break and you get rain, you're screwed. Again, CCH hasn't played a game yet which obviously means they haven't been able to get on a field. So...they can't play because of rain the first week and don't play because of spring break the second week. Now, do you schedule games the next week or do you practice to get the kids ready? NOW you've lost three weeks because of not scheduling games over spring break. Not to mention the other 25 players that stuck around the city.

Bottom line, make a decision. Are you a baseball player or a beach bum?

That's another thing I'd stress to my kids. Are your best high school memories from athletics or spring break? GT's never talked to me about what you've done on vacations. However, we've spoken many times about track/baseball...etc.

I can call and share hours of those Labor Day memories if you'd like...

I guess I would ask how spring break is any different than any other potential reason for a player to be out of town.

Should football players be allowed to miss practice and games for Labor Day? Should Campbell County players be allowed to miss football when they're on Fall Break for a week or 2? Should boys be allowed to miss basketball games and practice over Christmas break?

Call me "old school" but its either/or - not both.

Why have them give up baseball? Why can't the coach not schedule any games during spring break?

BTW, does this apply to college as well? I can't imagine Union's football and/or b-ball coach going for this?

At CCH, during sign-ups you are told that if you play baseball, you don't go on spring break.

That's the way it should be...the coaches are honest and straight forward with you, and I can assure you that there are no exceptions.

I missed 4 like I said. While those four weekends were fun as a kid that's a part of a team, looking back they were nowhere close to being with my quickly declining number of family members. SB with friends on the beach? No way. Time spent with family? I don't think I need to answer...
