I'm also kind of shocked because of heard rumors Ron Dawn wants back in coaching.

 

The rumors you've heard are just that...rumors.

Surprized they didn't at least look at a former NCC grad who I think consistantly "does more with less" than any head coach in NKY? Maybe they did and he's happy where he's at, but he could do wonders up on the hill!! Good luck to both Rob Detzel and Coach Brannen.

Just a quick word on Rob Detzel's decision to step down as boys' basketball coach at NewCath -- the worst-kept secret in Northern Kentucky basketball.

 

Rumors had been swirling about Detzel taking the school's AD job since the night his team played in the Ninth Region finals three weeks ago. Rob asked me not to write anything about it until he was able to tell his team, which he did last night -- classy move by a classy guy.

 

I've covered Detzel's teams for three years now. I don't think there was ever a time I mentioned him or any of his players in print when he didn't give me a sincere but totally unnecessary thank you (I do get paid for this afterall). I talked to him after some gut-wrenching losses, the kind that make coaches want to drop-kick the water cooler and crawl under the bench. Rob got frustrated and upset. Faust son is a senior and I think he is very happy at St. Henry and doesn't have any plans of retiring. He has evolved a great program and has lots of great people surrounding him. All the teams program right now, Frosh, JV, Varsity are all on the up and coming.

 

I would think if he does move anywhere its one of two places: 1. College Ranks 2. NCC down the road.

Since you named the guy I was refering to, I'll forgive the Jr/Sr thing--LOL; but I'd argue the timing may never be better!! St. Henry's lower classes weren't very impressive this year, and the returning varsity isn't the strongest. His son is leaving, he's a grad, he's done all he can do at St. Henry (could have won it all except for an untimely injury, with his "once in a lifetime class" a couple years ago), NCC a arguably better job, possible football (which can't be far behind at SH) effect on bball, etc.

I don't know about the JV from this year, but their freshman team was very good!

I agree with you on this one 100%. St. Henry does not have much coming up thru the ranks of JV and Varsity and this would be the perfect opportunity to go back to his alma matre to coach.

From personal experience in dealing directly with Coach Detzel on several occaissions, I'll echo the above sentiments about how classy this gentleman is. Great competitor, classy, classy coach and human being. Always ready to give credit to his opponents, always a kind word. This is the type of guy that needs to be in coaching. Our region will be less for having lost him, but I'm certain he will now become even more of an asset to the great fans and players at NewCath.

What makes NCC a better job than St.Henry right now?

 

St.Henry has a larger pool of talent and area to pick from and does not have football.

I have to agree with you. I interviewed Coach Detzel a couple of times for the All A radio network this year and he was great. Funny, classy and just an all round great guy. :thumb:
