1. St. Henry has a great pool of talent.

 

2. ST. Henry's lower classes weren't very impressive this year .The returning varsity might not be a favorite to win the region but they return 3 very nice seniors in Lenhof, Keubbing, and Rechtin. The JV team has a stock pile of Sophmores who have a some good talent and the freshmen team last season was one of the best freshman teams St. Henry has had since the 2003 class came through.

 

3. Football has been talked about since before I went to school at St. Henry. It won't happen!!! The funds aren't there and they don't feel like it would help school or athletics. St. Henry is a small school that competes in every sport at a very high level, and succeeds most of the time. Football would make this disapear.

 

4. Why would NCC be a better Job????

Note the word arguably in my post!! Just thinking it might have been prudent to at least talk to a very successful former grad, before giving it to someone else??

WOW!!! I heard Detzel was on his way out, but I can't believe they named Grant Brannen the coach already. He is very young. Was he the Freshman or JV coach. Plenty of coaches out there would have loved to have this job, and I can think of one in particular that might be heavily interested.

 

And he'd a been a great choice. Grant, however, has been involved with NewCath basketball since '90. Nobody knows the program better outside of

Coach Dawn, and nobody will work harder. I'm proud of my fellow class of '98er. He won't catch a break from the NewCath faithful, and I'm sure that he's aware of that. However, like I said, noone has had their finger on the pulse of the program more than Grant. He has good assistants who will help him. He'll be fine. Plus he has Kiernan coming back.

Overall it is sad that a few people ran Detzel out.... his record speaks for himself. 3 straight All A titles... regional runnerup this year... District champs once and runner up 4 times.

Not at all. That was a lot less of a fiasco than most thought.

How old is Brannen and what has he done in his coaching career?

It amuses me that some people think coaches move from one job to another because of the talent that may or may not be in the pipeline. Or discussions about one job being better than another, or the timing being right, because the talent pool is thin for the coming few years.

 

I can't imagine that coaches (especially one as accomplished and well respected as coach Faust) would even take such matters into serious consideration. I would think these decisions are based upon factors at a much higher level than that.

 

True, some schools have programs that are more desirable than others and some have better feeder systems in place. But these decisions are typically made for reasons such as; Career development, advancement possibilities, Loyalty to an Alma Mater, Income increase (certainly not an issue from parochial to parochial HS) and in some instances geographic decisions.

 

Coach Faust has done a terrific job at St. Henry and they are lucky to have him. He would certainly have done a great job at NCC as well but maybe he doesn't want to continue coaching long enough to make a move feasible for him or NCC. Maybe a drive from Union to Newport everyday is not all that appealing either.

He's 26. This is his first varsity gig, but he has been coaching JV for the last 4 years. He grew up around NewCath basketball, and like I stated earlier, knows the present-day program just as well as anyone else. He's young, excited, intelligent, open minded, and I think that he will do a great job.

However, the chance to coach at your Alma Mater, where you were there when NewCath ruled the 9th region, would make it appealing.
