December 31, 201411 yr Author Mediocre teams like Ole Miss, Miss St, and Missouri are ridiculously over rated because of the conference they play in, why can't it work in reverse? Are any of those teams in the playoff? Or do you hear anyone claiming they should be?
December 31, 201411 yr Are any of those teams in the playoff? Or do you hear anyone claiming they should be? No, but Miss St would be had they been able to beat that Ole Miss team. Would have been tragic and a direct byproduct of the SEC myth. Mizzou is playing in a high profile game despite losing to Indiana, which has been dismissed as "looking ahead". Ole Miss had NO business playing in a New Years 6 bowl, yet here they were because they are in the SEC.

The whole idea of the thread is that the four playoff system won't work, as TCU just showed us. Are you agreeing with that, or just stopping in to say the SEC is overrated?
December 31, 201411 yr I agree with that, "not fair" is part of life. However the NCAA could at least make an attempt to eliminate the doubt. Moving to as few as 6 teams could eliminate doubt, moving to 8 teams would be better. With an 8 team playoff, if your the 1st or second team out, you have no one to blame but yourself, or injuries, which is part of the game. However with a four team playoff, TCU or Baylor, basically got left out because their conference doesn't play a championship game. Obviously TCU is a great team, which would no doubt have won their first round game the way they played today, which would have advanced them to the final four. Instead, they never got that chance, since the "commitie" decided to leap frog them with OSU. The move to four was supposed to eliminate doubt. The point is until you reach some extreme numbers, a team just on the outside is going to feel shafted and any time a team on the fringe shows out in their bowl game we're going to be back here. I, like you, could see moving to 8. But I think it is naive to believe that will eliminate the doubt. There will always, ALWAYS, be something. Also, the FSU fan in me says "HEY!" to the notion that TCU would have no doubt advanced had they played FSU (as a 6 would have). You're assuming that a team capable of putting up a fight would have gotten run over the same way. Heck, it's as simple as TCU playing a higher ranked team versus a lower ranked one. Quite frankly, Ole Miss is just as much an argument against an expanded playoff as TCU is for it.
December 31, 201411 yr I'm not sure what your point is? The whole idea of the thread is that the four playoff system won't work, as TCU just showed us. Are you agreeing with that, or just stopping in to say the SEC is overrated? You originally asked the question should TCU and Baylor be punished for the conference they play in. My point is yes they should if it's weak. Teams like those I mention are rewarded simply for being in the SEC, why can't the reverse be true and a really good team gets punished for playing in a weak-or at least perceptually weak-conference? Ole Miss is not good, but was rewarded for being in a conference that is perceived strong. TCU is VERY good, but was punished for playing in a not so highly though of conference, and for that conference not having a champ game.
December 31, 201411 yr I think 8 is the right number and even with that the finalist would be playing 14 or 15 games. Use same system as current system to pick the 8 teams. Top 8 with no automatic bids...I don't want to see a 8-5 Conf. Champion in over a 11-1 TCUor other deserving team. If Oregon, USC and Arizona are top 8 teams they would all get in, no Conf. Limit either. My concern with 3 playoff games (8 team format) is that we would end up with a survivor and not necessarily the best team.

I don't believe any of them should be punished or rewarded for the conference they are in. Truth is, it has and always will happen. Which imo, is where expanding the playoff comes in. If you let 8 in, there would be a lot less doubt or argument for who was punished and rewarded. There is always going to be an odd man out, but if you can't play your way into the top 8, you have no gripe about not having the opportunity to win the championship. You keep bringing up Ole Miss, saying they were rewarded, how were they rewarded? They are not in the playoff, nor would they be if it was an 8 team playoff. TCU would have been in the 8 team playoff and the only reason they didn't make the 4 team playoff is because the other three teams played one more game than them.
December 31, 201411 yr Didn't GT explain the whole Baylor and TCU thing? That the Big 12 could have picked a champion on a tie breaker but decided against it? The NCAA isn't going to select a co-champion. This is just a start, I think within a few year it will expand to 8 teams, and I think 8 would be where it should be.
December 31, 201411 yr I guess you don't watch NFL Wildcard games either? Depends on who is playing. I have no desire to watch Arizona/Carolina or either one of the AFC games. At the same time I'd much rather watch those games than any college football games in that don't involve two teams ranked highly that I care about. I probably won't even watch a lot of the Alabama/OSU game.
December 31, 201411 yr So you are saying TCU and Baylor should be punished because of the conference they are in? No. I am saying that on their last weekend of the season to prove how worthy they were instead of playing each other or a high quality opponent for a championship like FSU and OSU were doing TCU was playing a crappy 2-9 team and that did them zero favors when trying to figure out if they were more worthy than OSU.

I don't believe either had the choice of playing for a conference championship game. That is ultimetly up to the conference.....
December 31, 201411 yr In reference to this thread, I would say they proclaimed it ,signed it, sealed it, stamped it, and delivered it. All this without an ad campaign or even a hint of animosity. Very well done TCU.
December 31, 201411 yr I don't believe either had the choice of playing for a conference championship game. That is ultimetly up to the conference..... The Big 12 only having 10 teams doomed them. Conf can not have a Conf Title game unless they have at least 12 teams, which the Big 12 does not.

Which again, is part of the problem with the 4 team playoff. TCU, and Baylor for that matter, were punished for not playing that extra game. The NCAA at its finest. Their idea of a playoff system is a joke.
