December 31, 201411 yr Is the $8MM potential vesting w/ 550 PA the only obligation to Byrd beyond 2015? If so, I like the deal.
December 31, 201411 yr It's nothing to get excited about but they needed someone to play LF. Should have done this 2 years ago. Just like Rolen I wanted the Reds to get him when he left Philly, not St Loius
January 1, 201511 yr IMO, another sign that the Reds are stuck. Want to play with the big boys (see Votto, Phillips and Bailey contracts) while trapped in a small market with a bad local tv deal. The Reds need to be a team that signs guys early to team friendly deals and trades talent for young talent to repeat the cycle. Paying these three guys may have doomed this franchise for years. Byrd? Would have loved him 5 years ago. Not expecting much more than we had from Ludwig.
January 1, 201511 yr Again you can't play the small market card. The Reds had the highest payroll in the division last season. The answer is right in front of you only if you choose to see it.

They tried to act like a major player and are starting to get burned because they can't afford anymore big name players? They aren't like the Yankees and can spend whatever they want for guys who can't produce. They invested in a few guys that have had a little return and are getting hurt because of it.
January 1, 201511 yr Yankees are not in their division. They had a higher payroll than all the other NL Central teams last season. They made bad investments. Admit it
January 1, 201511 yr There's only one true major market team in th NL central. Hmm how they doing? So please let's drop the small market excuse. It's lame at best
January 1, 201511 yr ...... Getting half of his $8 million in cash takes the deal from really bad to bad. Unlike UKMF, I don't think you can be cavalier about good young pitching. Trading one for a 37 year old stopgap is silly. However, it helps them not be awful until July, so I get it.
January 1, 201511 yr Byrd's career is a virtual definition of a PED abuser. Let's just hope he caught some magic somehow or doesn't get caught will wearing a Reds uniform. If he avoids getting caught, then this deal is about the best we could have hoped for.
January 1, 201511 yr And now I read in today's paper that Byrd was caught using PED's in 2012. I forgot about that. His career path looks just like Bonds, Clemens and all the other cheaters. This is a ticking time bomb. Cross your fingers.

They seem to be trying to do both, which will not work. The Votto and BP contracts are just killing this team. I so wish they would have traded Votto instead of signing him to that insane contract - and I said so at the time. BP's contract was just crazy too.
