So, you say you didn't think this Mayfield team was very good going into the season and you say by those who watched a game or two of Mayfield and wasn't overly impressed with what they saw from Mayfiled are wrong and you think they are the best team in 1A, 2A, 3A and 5A? Lol

 

Sorry, I know you're a fan of your team and all, but reading your post about how they weren't one of the better Mayfield teams yet they are probably the best team out of the 4 classes makes me wonder a little about what you use to base that of of.

 

First putting them as the best in 5A makes me laugh. They wouldn't beat not only Pulaski Co. but they wouldn't come close to Bowling green and they'd lose to Graves and Cooper also. Just sayin

 

They beat Graves Co 21-0

Mayfield beat Graves 21-0. I saw the Pulaski/Graves game and I think Mayfield could beat Pulaski ,not with the game they had in 1A title game but with one of their better games. Never saw DeSales play but if Murray hung with them......

 

And also, Desales won the Murray game with the mis-aplication of a rule that cost Murray a touchown as we all know by now.

What exactly impressed anyone about Pulaski Co. Sorry, guys, I think they had a pretty solid D, but, Graves was also a one-man show with absolutely no passing game. Not to hard to defend. That's why Mayfield shut them out. Pulaski's offense was less than impressive, imo, decent, at best. Of course, I'm strickly looking at 1 state finals game and maybe they didn't play there best game. It happens. I would definitely take Desales over Pulaski, should they happen to play..

I saw the Mayfield/Willimsburg game and I think Pulaski would beat Mayfield, not with the game they had in the 5A title game but one of their other better games.

Pulaski beats DeSales...Pulaski played that game very very conservatively. Coaches were sure that Graves couldn't move the ball on them, so they played conservatively as not to beat themselves.

As I look the list over, I think CAL is in the right spot at #4 but their rating number looks a little low to me. I also think New Cath is a too low. I would take them up to about #14, just ahead of Raceland. Bardstown also might be a little low.

When Mayfield and Graves played had Graves even figured out who their QB was yet?

 

Hard to place too much on a game played almost 3 months ago.

Cardinal fans would fit in perfectly here in NKY. Desales would beat Mayfield. It is ok to admit that. Desales defense was incredible. They did things to NewCath that nobody has ever done to NewCath. Had they not had 4 fumbles that game would have been a running clock.

 

You are never as good as your best game, and you are never as bad as your worst. You are somewhere in between. Unless that was Desales best game, and there is no way that it was, they beat a NewCath team handily. This wasn't NewCath's worst game. They were that much better.

 

IMO, they would keep Mayfield's offense off of the field. The game with Murray was close, but that is the style that Desales plays. Field position and time of possession.

I don't put a lot of stock in how teams play at the beginning of the year. Yes, Mayfield beat Graves at the beginning of the year, so did Murray. It is all about how you finish and Graves became a better team as the year went on, as with many title contending teams. There are some really good teams in 5A that fizzled out by the end of the year. I wasn't thinking 5A teams in this conversation, but obviously there is facts to support the case of those teams being in this conversation. There are some teams that started slow and finished great. If we are judging how the teams played as they finished, I'm not sure Mayfield would beat Beechwood again. I'm not sure Desales beats CAL or Murray again. I'm not sure Belfry beats Central. That's why I think this post is good to see how teams passed the eyeball test of avid fans throughout the states. No dog in the fight, but as a fan, these teams could compete with each other all day every day with a different outcome each time. If I had to take one team and put them against anyone in 1A, 2A, 3A, and 5A, I would take Bowling Green and they didn't even make it to the title game. Parity at all levels in the state of Ky. I will take this conversation one step further, I would really love to see 4 classes again.........ok, off my soapbox now

i think i am going to quit engaging in theoretical disputes about which team would beat which team when Mayfield can't even be acknowledged to being likely to beat teams that we played and beat. The jealousy is strong with some of you.

A little off on Belfry.

Belfry looked great at the start of the year dominating 6A Henry Clay and 5A Southwestern. It was the middle of the year and end of the regular season they dipped when injuries mounted up.

 

When Belfry got healthy in Week 2of the playoffs they suddenly were back to dominating form.

 

A prime example is comparing Belfry's first game with Lawrence County then looking at the Regional Final game.

DeSales didn't even have their top RB playing in the finals, right?

On paper, I would take DeSales over Mayfield. If I had to bet in real life, no way I would bet against Mayfield. They would find a way and make the plays they need to win. I also think DeSales style of play would hurt them versus Mayfield. They would play that close low scoring game, look in complete control and then Mayfield would make a big play or two and get the win.

No stock in the beginning of the season huh? Mayfield beat Beechwood, at Beechwood, by 11 points in the next to the last week of the season. And we finished the season by beating an undefeated Willamsburg team. I sure hope you aren't a stockbroker.

I watched the 1A, 2A, & 3A games on the internet and from what I saw, DeSales.........WITHOUT QUESTION! They were on a whole different level than the others.
