i think i am going to quit engaging in theoretical disputes about which team would beat which team when Mayfield can't even be acknowledged to being likely to beat teams that we played and beat. The jealousy is strong with some of you.

 

Jealousy will happen when you are successful. I think the thing that bugs you the most is the fact that no one was impressed with Mayfield this year, as compared to other years. That is a testament to how good the Mayfield teams have been. The trump card to this thinking is that they still won it all in a "down" year for Mayfield standards.

Mayfield handily defeated Graves and Murray. Much more convincingly than Pulaski or DeSales. Mayfield also appears to rate out higher. But Mayfield also looked, as someone stated, like a 1A team in the final and I agree they did look unlike the team I watched most of the year. The Cards had a similar effort in their first game with Russellville. So Mayfield is the best if you catch them on their A game nights and Desales, Belfry or Pulaski if Mayfield is having a off night. I think the off games were a result of such a young team. Overall, through my Cardinal colored glasses of course, I would take Mayfield. They were young but they brought it when it mattered most against the big boys

No stock in the beginning of the season huh? Mayfield beat Beechwood, at Beechwood, by 11 points in the next to the last week of the season. And we finished the season by beating an undefeated Willamsburg team. I sure hope you aren't a stockbroker.

Not a stock broker, so you can let go of your hope. You did beat Beechwood and congrats for that. You make it sound as if you dominated them and there was a big difference in talent. I don't believe that was the case at all. They didn't play well and you capitalized. You didn't play well against Williamsburg and still managed to win. For that reason alone, you are the 1A state champions. Not sure what you are getting so upset with, but no one can take that away from you. Regardless, that not many on here think your team was as dominate this year

In fact didn't Murray lead that game until late in the 3rd and have a 4th Down deep in Mayfield territory that they fumbled the snap?

Also if we are going by "how bad Graves lost"

 

Paducah Tilghman beat Graves by 2 TD's the week prior to Mayfield beating Graves and Tilghman wasn't within 4 TD's of the top 3 or 4 teams in 3A.

 

By the logic of "We beat them more".. that would bean South Warren and subsequently Central and Belfry both deserve to be higher than Mayfield. South Warren not only beat PT worse..they even shut them out.

I still stand by my eyeball test.

 

There are about 7-8 teams that could beat each other on any given night...but to me DeSales and Belfry stand out due to their dominating defenses. Of those two, to me DeSales had the better offense and Special Teams. Coincidentally, I also thought DeSales and Belfry had the most impressive Offensive Lines of any of the teams.

 

The delta is very narrow...but to me DeSales appeared to be the only team I would say was the prohibitive favorite in any game they would have played against the others.... neutral field, home, or away.

To think Mayfield could beat every 5A team this year is just reaching....sorry.

Mayfield has something that neither of the other 2 have in match-up terms and that is a balanced offense. It makes defending them completely different. As far as these 1 game "eye" test goes, Mayfield fails a lot of the eye tests vs McCracken, Tilghman and other larger teams but win anyway.

Belfry would be a tougher matchup on Mayfield when healthy because of the sheer size of their team. Desales played 1 team with anything resembling a passing game. C.A.L. beat them on the day that they threw for 218 and lost on the day that they threw for 104.

NewCath's passing game wasn't all that bad. Desales D line owned them.

The funny thing about Mayfield, they didn't pass the eyeball test all year, even to it's own fans. Most knowledgeable Cardinal fans saw this team and didn't put it on the level of the 10,12 or 13 teams. Not as fast, a new QB, smaller in the trenches, no big play WR, etc.. However, as the season wore on, they continued to just win and do it impressively against teams who actually looked the part.. Tilghman, Murray, Graves, Caldwell and even Russellville looked like the better team with the "so-called" eyeball test, but, Mayfield won convincingly against each.. By the way, the Graves game was the 5th game of the year, not exactly 1st of the year as some on here have said.. With every win, the fans became more confident and probably over hyped them. But, in the end, they're hanging #11 in the trophy case, despite what the eyeball test says. This team was a blue collar, opportunistic team that what they lacked in talent, they made up for in playing hard and smart and getting the most out of there abilities. The great thing is, the majority of this years team returns along with some fantastic underclassmen, so, they should be right back in the thick of things next year and may even pass the eyeball test again..

 

PS : I do wish Mayfield would get rid of the all black look or at least spruce up the uniforms a little. The all red helmets, I can live with, but, they're uni's are pretty plain, imo and they could do a lot better..

Newcath averaged 108 yards per game passing. That is not balance like Mayfield has. Like I showed earlier 218 beat them 104 did not.

Graves changed QB's after the Mayfield game, at which point they had a record of 1 win and 3 losses. They reeled off 10 straight wins after the QB change before losing in the finals.
