For Those That Have Already Attended A Game Or Two

Announcers Responsibilities

  • An announcer's comments should be made only during a dead ball.
  • Announcers should only announce basic information that does not potentially affect play in general, the players, the coaches, or the officials.
  • Announcers can influence the atmosphere of the contest by what is said and how it is said. The announcer who performs professionally promotes good sportsmanship by what he/she says and how he/she acts upon saying it.

Announcers should report items such as:

a) Player who scored

b) Player charged with the foul

c) Player attempting the free throw

d) Team charged the time-out (or note officials time-out if applicable)

e) Length of time-out

f) Player entering game

g) An explanation of an unusual situation as directed by the officials

Announcer should not report items such as:

a) Number of points scored by a player

b) Time remaining

c) Type of foul or violation

d) Number of baskets (two or three) by a specific player

*It is important that the Scorer, the Timer, and the Announcer remain neutral at all times. These positions are key components of game management. If for any reason a member of the scoring table crew cannot remain neutral, game management should be notified and that crew member shall be replaced.

Can we get the refs to abide by this too? :)

Maybe this is the main issue.

Announcer giving details while the visitor's are shooting free throws. I can't imagine it happens often and can't remember the last time I saw it.

The fact that you can't say if it's a 2 or 3 is kind of absurd.

Are there new rules in place for PA folks? I hadn't heard about that.

Thanks, papa.

From the NFHS Basketball Points of Emphasis - 2014-15, Published on October 17, 2014 (LINK):

1. Announcer Responsibilities - The announcer shall be prohibited from making an announcement while the clock is running and while the clock is stopped and the ball is alive…such as during a free throw, a throw in, etc. Doing so could potentially affect communication of coaches, players or be disconcerting.

- The announcer shall be prohibited from interrupting the game through the use of the microphone unless there is an emergency.

- Announcements or comments shall be made during those times when there is a stoppage of the clock and the ball is not live, such as time outs, between quarters, pre-game, half time and post game.

- The announcer is allowed to announce basic information that does not potentially affect the play in general, the players, the coaches, or the officials. The announcer’s information is not official information and could be misinformation shared with all.

- Appropriate training of announcers by personnel and proper pre-game instruction by the Referee are necessary.

May be Announced - Examples:

- Player who scored

- Player charged with foul

- Player attempting free throw

- Team granted a time out

- Length of time out: 30 seconds or 60 seconds

- Player entering game

- Team Rosters

Shall not be Announced – Examples

- Number of points player scored

- Number of fouls on player

- Number of team fouls

- Number of team time outs or number remaining

- Time remaining in the quarter/game

- Type of foul or violation

- Emphatic 2 or 3 point goal

The announcer’s role does not include “cheering the home team on” or otherwise inciting the crowd. Doing so is common at other levels of athletic events. But high school athletics is different because sports are educationally based. In a very real sense, the public-address announcer at a high school event is a “Champion of Character”. He/she can influence the atmosphere of the contest by what is said and how it is said. The announcer who performs professionally promotes good sportsmanship by what he/she says and how he/she acts upon saying it.

Can the announcers shake hands with coaches after the game?

I don't see why they would but I would guess then can.

Never know with KHSAA rules being involved.

Is there an appreciable difference in "PA delivery style" as compared to last season? Just wondering.

I go to watch a high school basketball game, I don't pay attention to the PA delivery style.

Did the guy from Scott quit when he heard this POE?

These rules are contradictory....you can announce the player that scored and what type of shot it was, but not supposed to announce while clock is running. Clear as mud

Just more unnecessary "guidelines", make the games less exciting.

From what I hear? Even in this thread, is that these are guidelines not rules.

I've been to a great many games over the years. Some of the things I've witnessed and heard:

  • PA announcers doing actual play by play
  • Only announcing baskets for the home team
  • Saying that baskets were made by jersey numbers instead of names
  • Announcing baskets, not fouls
  • Announcing fouls, not baskets
  • Announce the starting lineup then nothing else
  • Seen a PA guy get ejected by the official for complaining about a call.

It's not that hard of a job. You just can't have a cheerleader doing it

I realize this is a volunteer position. But try to get someone who does not have a child on the court; or even someone whose kids have graduated from the school. Then you have someone who cares enough about the program to do it, but with less of an emotional connection.
