Worlds worst cheap shot

Featured Replies

I have no problem with letting the other team know their actions are inappropriate.

When I officiated football and we felt a team was running up the score it usually only took one flag on a long run or scoring play to get our point across to the coach.

There should not be a fight. If there is' date=' then the fight would also be inexcusable and subject to penalties - both during and after the game.[/quote']

I am fine with penalties.

Sometimes you do what you feel is right. Sometimes a flag is not enough.

A bit melodramatic with the thread title wouldn't you agree. Definitely uncalled for and yes a cheap shot, probably not an ejectable offense is it, maybe since the kicker is defenseless. But I witnessed a worse play as it was an intent to injure a player which in my book is a much worse case of "cheap shot". I'm guessing at some point most people have witnessed a worse play in their eyes. But I get the frustration but like I said, a bit over the top.

Would love to read Ram's' date=' Little Ram's, and the rest of the Raceland posters' comments on this cheap shot.[/quote']

He was reprimanded. We do not teach that.

I'll say it was a cheap shot because that is what society expects.

But, have you ever seen what happens when a pitcher hits a teams clean-up hitter with a high hard one?

I, honestly, can't remember the number of cheap shots our kickers have taken after the opposing team seen the score as being "ran up". Were they cheap, yes, but not unexpected.

Retaliation is not the best course of action. But, every player on that field knew why that hit occurred, did any of them, on either team, seem surprised? It was wrong, but not unexpected.

Yes, the other team hits the other teams best player, in baseball.

So, they single out the kicker....I guess we know why the score was what it was...

I guess based on the number of times Raceland has ran up the score on teams(based on the post), why is anyone surprised someone ran it up on them? Even though it doesn't look like they were.

I'm curious and would love to see some footage of Raceland kickers getting cheap shots like that, also as far as the bolded, it really doesn't matter if everyone knew why it occured, it is still dirty and cheap...just sayin

So if your QB just got laid out on a late, cheap hit, you are going to respond by taking him out of the game and telling your players not to respond?

If my players safety were at risk and the officials would not stop it I would pull my whole team off of the field and not think twice about it. I've never seen it get to that point however.

Ok, I'm going to play the role of unpopular devil's advocate. If you have an opponent that is mercilessly running up a score , and both you and your opponent know you you don't have the skill to stop them, is there any point at which a "cheap shot" becomes appropriate? I say if your opponent is overtly looking to humiliate you, I say yes there is!

No. That's the point at which you grow a sack, pull your big boy pants up, hate that team forever, use as motivation and then GET BETTER!!

I do not condone running up the score either. Well, mostly I don't care unless its my team doing the running up with starters in which I can't tolerate.

Hey Ram, sounds like a good reason to go for two. Justifiable to protect the kicker.

Glad you don't ref any longer because that's not your job as an official. Call the game as played.

I would commend the coach for the way he handled it. He was obviously upset and I'm not sure what I would have done in that situation with him. But he seemed to stay pretty calm (for what he saw) and actually looked like he turned it into a teaching moment, which is what good coaches do. He could have very easily drug him off the field by the face mask, but he seemed to handle it very well. Kudos to the coach, for at least what was visible on the screen.

For those defending the TD pass by saying "it was the only pass on the drive"' date=' you do realize that is exactly why it is low brow? If you have ran every play and appeared to be running the clock out and then pop a pass at the end trying to score... to me that is worse than coming out on the first play and taking a shot downfield. Still doesn't excuse the kid's actions. If he is an underclassmen I would hope he sits out the first game next year as self imposed punishment.[/quote']

How about the DB who was playing the softest coverage I've ever seen.

Glad you don't ref any longer because that's not your job as an official. Call the game as played.

That's pretty universal amongst most refs and I have no problem with it. It's how they maintain control of the game and prevent a brawl in extreme circumstances.

If he's not suspended 1 game from his next varsity sport, then there is no punishment.
