The biggest thing about Neil is this was the first time he has had to install his offensive philosophy. His other 2 stops, the air raid was implemented, the recruits were in place and he had to go in and continue/build on what was there.

 

To get a fair judgement on how good he is, you have to look at UK in 2 years whether he is there or not and see the offensive output.

I don't think I would rely upon the bio on the team website a coach coaches for. Of course that bio is going to make him look great. Have you ever seen a team bio which mentioned anything negative about a coach?

Of course they will highlight the positives, but those are still facts, his accomplishments.

 

I probably should have stayed out of this thread. I am a huge Neal Brown fan and I have been since he was a Boyle County Rebel. I think Neal, his dad, father in law, family are great people. I am admittedly biased, but I still think he is a great coach. And, I should also stay out of this thread because I know there is nothing that could change my mind on that.

 

Something else that makes me sympathetic when an offense struggles is that I have called offensive plays myself for a long time. There have been many Friday nights, our play calling was limited because of personnel, injuries, etc. that the general public was unaware of.

 

Of course, if you ask some of our fans, they will say that the play calling didn't look bad......it WAS bad. Lol. Which....goes with the territory and probably another reason I needed to stay off of this thread!

 

I am also a huge Patrick Towles fan. He came to my QB camp when he was a little guy. He continues to make a point to speak to me when I am at a practice or see him. Very polite, courteous, etc. And, I really believe he is well on his way to a great career at UK. To me, he is a bigger stronger version of Neal Pawsat and Dustin Grutza....and I think those guys are phenomenal, and I won't change my mind on that either! :lol2:

I really didnt see thr air raid offense this year. Did you? I didnt see a TE (slot) dominated throwing game from a 2-back gun set with 2 guys outside that could find grass. I saw mostly a multiple offense out of a 1-back gun set. Im not crazy enough to think that the cats have everything in place (across the board from OL, to rec, etc) to truly be an air raid type of attack as of yet. I did see improvement and some guys who look like they may be pretty good in time.

How many times did Leach use those sets? Mumme used them but most Air Raid teams have moved away from those sets and into a true spread.

Got it, your talking about the Leach system, opposed of the Franklin system in contrast to the Hal and Tim system that was at UK in the late 90's. Still each of those still use a variety of screens as well as having qb's read progressions and throw to grass. Yep you are right,other than a few screens, I didnt see much of that. Did you? By the way, how have those guys done the last 2 years, with lesser players? I think guys like Couch, Yeast, Antony White, Whelan and others were pretty dang good. Talent is relevent, even in running the system

To be fair, I was not always in favor of the play calling for UK this year. As a defensive guy I don't think they went vertical enough and teams could just bleed UK out by keeping everything in front of them and stopping the run.

However I have no where near the expertise or experience of Coach N. Brown so who am I to say?

Absolutely nothing wrong with any of these approaches. The point being made is that contrary to beleif, you still have to have talent. The point of spread is to put skilled athletes in space. Key terms here (skilled athletes). If your opponent has more skill on defense then it can put you in a bind as much as any other offense that lines up traditionally. In the spread, you also better be pretty dang good up front for protection just like any other offense. I just find it funny that some folks think the spread is always the solution. What is Washington State this year record wise. I would assume Leach improved this year, but I bet it was not as much as some would think . TTU is terrible and they have been doing this stuff for a long while. What small conference is Tony in now? Are they blowing it up in mid major ball? The best offenses all have mature talent (every once in a while a young gun emerges with talent around him already in place)

I actually like Neal Brown and I believe he was a great asset to the KY recruiting. IMO for most of the games the offense scored enough points to win the games. For me,,,,,,,the DEFENSE is the problem. You cannot win games giving up 40ish points per game

This was my gripe (& I think most of Neal Brown's detractors).

 

If "I" can predict the play call, from amongst a small number of options, then I am very disappointed. I expect sharp coaches to be able to outsmart the defenders & keep them on edge.
