For example Moeller is only listed as having 706 Boys. That is the number in grades 9, 10, 11.

I have been following hs football pretty heavy the past 10 years. Excitement involvement is more today than it has ever been. I believe it has a lot to do with the change in the class system.

 

Wanna alienate people model yourself after these states. I have two masters and my head began to spin reading that mess.

 

It's not the playoff system that makes these places football hotbeds. It's they have multiple times the population and talent of ky.

Especially in Texas, high school football is a way of life and has been for many years. Better facilities, better community support, better coaching???, etc.....more interest and it is more important to the people in these states.

The interest in Kentucky High School basketball has really dwindled in the last 30+ years.

 

That is until the state tournament which still is a magical time.

So some think having 6 title games in ky are too many while the states they like to point to as the way it should be done have 10+ different title games. Makes perfect sense lol

No matter what Kentucky does there will be haters!!!

 

I'm done with this subject, people get all high and mighty with some sort of superiority complex.

 

I'll never be convinced that playing it out on the field isn't preferable to reduced teams or some mathematical formula used to determine who in and who's out.

It seems that everywhere I go, there are a lot more people at football games then basketball games. I know in our area there are thousands at football games and only a few hundred at basketball games. That is why I can't figure out what people are talking about when they say Kentucky is a basketball state, it seems as if there is a lot more interest in football then basketball.

To be fair.....there are approximately 5 home games in football and 14 in basketball. And with Title IX no one can figure out when b-ball games are anymore.

With all do respect, that is a weak argument. IF Basketball is king, then it is a priority to see, and people would know when games are. Schools print schedules every year, and politicians print schedules on pocket cards. It Basketball is king, people will find out when games are.

My point is football games are more of a happening because they are fewer and everyone knows when they are going to be played and 95% are played on Friday night when there is no competition from other sports basically and it is not a school night.

 

Basketball can have the Boys team playing an away game and the Girls team playing a Home game on the same night and UK is playing and it is a school night for parents and students.

Statistics (Bell Curve) – School Size Advantage

 

The average size male in the US is between 5’7” and 6’1. That range covers 75% of the male population. There are around 2% of males in the 6’1” to 6’4” height. Assuming that this holds true for the High School population.

 

A school with 400 male students will have statistically 8 between 6’1” and 6’4” while a school with 1,000 male students will have 20. If 25% have athletic ability then the school with 8 will have 2 athletes and the school with 1,000 will have 5. If you platoon then the school with 400 has one for offence and one for defense while the school with 1,000 has 2.5 for offence and 2.5 for defense.

But, the argument for football being classed has always been, "the more students you have to choose from the better players you will get". I have been vocally against this argument because I think it's more about "Who" you have to choose from, then "how many" you have to choose from. But, if the argument to class sports is valid, then it has to be true for all sports, not just the sport that need more players.

 

Hit the nail on the head here, how many large 6A schools have enormous enrollments but can't compete with school's with 1,000 less kids in them. In KY basketball is easily practiced at home and requires no equipment that it can be a small school thing, but football requires so many kids that a larger athletic population will win more games. Hard work is going away with our kids, and the willingness of kids to give up their summers to practice in pads in the heat is going away too. It is much easier to practice in no pads kicking a soccer ball or pounding the round ball all summer and winter long in the gym.
