9th Region Top bench players to watch

Featured Replies

Not determined. 4 returning starters juniors Lange, Jump, Shwartz, and Jones . Other spot up for grabs. Only one senior on team this year, O'Sullivan, since Martin opted not to return. Would have likely seen sophomore Ally Ast to get the starting spot but she is out for season with ACL. Several junior possiblities as well as middle school players that were brought up to play with the Raiders this year.

I don't know about the returning starters, but if she doesn't start varsity it won't be long until you are hearing the name Maddie Scherr often... 7th grader with outstanding handle, shooter and athletic defender....

Maddie is very good, but in my opinion will not start in the next two years for Ryle. The 4 returning starters are JRs this year and Ally Ast (injured) would be in the equation next year and that doesn't even count all the other players they have. Heck, you have Juliet McGregor and Lauren Schwartz just a year ahead of Maddie who are outstanding! I would doubt Maddie jumps any of those players anytime soon. And like I said, that's not counting anyone else in the freshman and sophomore classes. And the rest of the JRs.

I love Maddie's game and Maddie is going to be very good, but I doubt she starts in the next two years for Ryle. They have a ton of talent at guard coming up.

H Poe did not return. Think she is focusing on soccer as she is already one of the best soccer players in the region as a soph.

Hardwood fan did you get the pm's I sent you?

Hate to hear about Ally. She is tough as nails. All my best to her!

I thought this thread was for top bench players in the 9th region. It didn't take long to start listing starters which should be another thread don't you think?

As far as the best bench players, I will throw out a name, someone who can and has played the 1,2 and 3 at the varsity level and a lot of playing time at all the positions and one of the best defenders in the region and that is Sadie Moore for Boone. She has always been one of the best defenders around and Nell will always put her on their opponents best player to shut them down and she usually does.

I agree. However, I think since it stemmed from the top ten preview list, the intentions were to discuss the others in the region that probably deserved recognition and the term "bench players" was used. Even in the original post, the players the poster states are far from bench players! The 9th is loaded with above average talent this year. I don't think elite talent, but a lot of above avg talent. So I think it was a way to get some discussion for the "others".

It is my understanding that Maddie has already leapfrogged a lot of those players, and has been starting in scrimmages at the point. In fact, it is my understanding that the Boone County schools have a rule that she would not even be allowed to play varsity, which she certainly is, unless she was in the top rotation of the players, either starting or one of the first couple off of the bench.

She may be...but I got some info that told me there may be more to that info...guess we'll see. I also know they are thinking about bringing up others (like 4 8th graders), who I bet would be in the mix with Maddie. Bringing young kids up and putting them in roles this early in the season can mean a lot of different things. And I think the Boone Co rule has changed dramatically from that description. I have heard many different stories and I'm not sure how it's going to end up. But I know Cooper had a girl last year that dressed varsity, but was definitely not a starter and didn't play much. She will be really good, but wasn't in the top 8 last year as an 8th grader.

Again, Maddie is very good, but I don't think she is any better than the two 8th graders I mentioned (who you know) and I know she's not better than Ally Ast (injured). Again, I don't know all the others in line, but I have to think they have some other talent in a school that big.

Nothing against Maddie at all, but if she starts at PG for Ryle, they are going to struggle. Love her game, but starting varsity as PG in the 9th is going to be challenging for ANY PG this year with the guard strength we have in this region. She is very good at her age group, but Varsity is a different level when you are talking trapping, speed of the game, decision making and playing against giants. And I don't just mean tall girls under the basket. She will be good, but let's not put that kind of pressure on her.

As you know, I've seen her play against girls just a year older...which included the two I mention that will go to Ryle and she did fine, but was not a standout in that game. And that's just girls one year older.

Her game is much, much elevated over the past year IMO. I did see her play with and against the girls you mentioned, probably 20 times over the last 6 months ... handle, shooting and defensively, not even close IMO. This summer, against some very good 8th grade AAU teams (Bridget Williams All-Stars) she was the best player on the floor. I think you may be surprised ....

Who are the starting five for Ryle?

Crickets! Only one answer to this question? Is the fact they return 4 starters a lock those 4 will start again? I know there are Ryle people on here. If there's nothing going on, this should be an easy answer!!!! Any surprises in the Ryle camp? Who should start and be the top 8?

Just wondering what AAU team she played for and what age group ?

She was with the royals and then switched to 6th grade stars She plays with whoever she can get a game in with. Awesome kid. I watched her 10 times. Highly skilled great basketball IQ. I have seen her get shut down however by quick fast and physical players. Saw her at ockerman play last vs a team and she was shut down but also had little or no help.

Ok , I know who she is now. She's a very nice little player for her age. But making the jump into a Varsity Line Up, not sure if she's quite ready for that yet. I can see her playing at the high school level.

Seems like moving middle school players up to Varsity is a new trend in NKY girls basketball since it seems most schools have at least 1 MS on the team. I could see this being necessary for small schools to field a team, but most large schools aren't hurting for players. I'm left to wonder if this is really due to talent or for status purposes. I have also heard that this movement isn't coach sought (not only because recruiting violation)& if anything, coaches have no say in the matter. Once on the team, the coach does have a say about playing time. I'd be curious how the coaches feel about parents going above their heads forcing a player to be on the team. I have officiated many youth leagues, so I have seen most if not all the young AAU talent & in my book there isn't one single MS kid that belongs as a Varsity starter &/or bench. I could see many benefiting by playing up on freshman or JV team, but Varsity is a whole different atmosphere. I can't tell you the number of times I have watch a truly talented young player with a big time future, derailed because the parents pushed them to play up. Basketball is a sport that requires an even 50% talent & 50% drive. These young players may have the ability/talent to play up, but maturity-wise not prepared for that side of the game. The mental half can take a confident middle school player & cause them to get frustrated because they are not getting the same results they did in middle school ball. The pressure to measure up or prove they belong can become overwhelming which may lead to lower self-esteem/confidence level & once that happens, it is very hard to get that competitive edge back!! IMO...unless a MS player is single handedly destroying other peer teams/opponents, they belong playing with their age group/grade. NKY no doubt has a very talented group of young players coming up, but none of those players are above the development years middle school is meant for!!!

Curious your thoughts on some of the above mentioned kids that may not be getting the coaching they need to succeed at the middle school level. I am quite sure that has played into the decision of some of these parent and their children. Just an opinion.
