However, I am hearing rumors of Boone Co schools starting to reach into the MS because of the new rule change and trying to get their hands on the best of the middle school kids and playing them against other Boone schools. Again, rumors, but if that's happening, then they better figure out how to put a stop to that asap or it will escalate into a ton of issues. I hope that's not really the case...bringing up kids because they can and to keep the other schools off of them.

 

Interesting comment and I'm not certain but I thought it didn't matter where the child plays as a middle school student, even if they play up, that until they actually being attending the high school of choice as a 9th grader they are free to choose any school they wish for their "true" high school playing time. I mean as long as it's within the schools district or they could attend a private school. So, if Boone Co schools are moving players up in order to keep the parents/coaches happy and involved in their own program then shame on them. I really hope that is a rumor and that Boone Co schools/coaches/parents are not playing that game.

 

I knew that someone would bring up challenging them academically v/s athletically and as a parent of two Gifted and Talented kids I want them to be challenged in all areas of their lives. I leave it up to the experts to teach and to coach. I have the utmost respect for both b/c dealing with us CRAZY parents is more of a chore than helping develop the kids to reach and surpass their own goals. Communication is key, as with anything in life. So, with that said if parents feel that their kids are ready to play up but the coach might not then make a plan to work with your child and the coach to get them to there. Empower your child to do the work and communicate with the coach. The coach doesn't need to speak to us as parents, they need the athlete to be able to communicate their goals and what they can offer the team. One of Life's biggest lessons is to fall down and fail. It's how you pick yourself up and become better or just throw your hands up and point your finger and play the blame game. The kids and parents can choose which route to take. Just b/c you have worked hard and you feel you deserve something doesn't mean someone else feels the same. You don't just get b/c you want. You get b/c it was earned. It hurts our feelings when we try out for something and don't make it and feel we deserved it. We live in a world these days where if our kids want something we as parents feel pressured to ensure they get it. Well, sometimes the lesson comes back to not only the child but the parents as well.

Maddie is going to be a great player and so is Juliet and Lauren and all three can make contributions now. Please let's not put undue pressure on these outstanding young ladies by starting to recant our 3rd 4th and 5th person interpretations of how a practice session did or did not go. RC asked for some Union input..here ya go:

 

1) There is no written rule on Boone County middle school players moving up..therefore it's subject to the interpretation of the person relaying what they heard. Henry..if you analyze your own statement you could deduct it makes no sense. Ryle has two 8th graders and a 7th grader that have made the varsity team. If what you said were accurate, all three would start or be the 6th, 7th, and 8th player in. C'mon man. With that said...any of the 3 or all 3 could contribute.

 

2) Ryle's four returning starters are as solid as any team would want and here's the beauty...NO returning starter should think their spot is owed to them based on anything other than their "bringing it" every day in practice and showing their leadership on and off the floor. Lady Raiders are blessed with 10 upper classman (9 Jrs and a SR). 7 of the 9 Jrs had intense AAU experiences over the summer and all improved their game as did many others in the 9th

 

3) When you add #1 and #2..here's what ya get: 4 returning JR starters of Lang, Jump, Jones, and Schwartz with several other solid upperclassman and 3 outstanding middle school players...all capable of stepping in. Look for a very competitive team coming your way from Union!

 

My point exactly. No winning coach is going to base their decision on who starts or plays on the student's grade but on their ability to be the best player for the position.

This is my last argument. What if??

 

Player from Ohio breaks the national point record her Sr. year, let's say it's 5,000 points. 4 years Varsity.

 

Player from Ky, a year later breaks the record her Sr. year, let's say 5,005. 6 years Varsity. MS play 7th and 8th grade.

 

Is that fair? Is it recognized? Do they just take the best 4 years? How do you compare? Legitimize the record?

As long as Ky and KHSAA allow it , coaches will use it, manipulate it, parents of those kids will support it. Why not, it gives them exposure and the "OMG, an 8th grader is as good or talented enough to play at HS? They must be the next Britney Griner..." But sadly they are not. Parents get to boast and gloat about their super star. It's not humbling, it's about exposure and the ugly truth about athletics. It about teaching your kids, right from wrong. Waiting your turn to show greatness. As a former athlete, I would have been beyond upset if I knew I had to play against a MS player when I was on Varsity. Not because they were good enough to play, but the integrity of being in HS and what it meant to be on Varsity. For all those that tried and never made it, it was to be special, getting that letter. Now it's watered down because there are not enough to fill a team? Trust me, plenty of talent that walk the halls that say forget it because of politics of MS players, playing in Ky.

Tell that to the Ohio player and I'm sure 70% of the other states that don't support MS playing HS. I'll find the real stats on that.

KHSAA has set the rules and standards. It is allowed. My argument is Ky is the minority in this amongst states. Your also telling me MS kids are so good (freakish) that they can play up not one level but 3? A lot of comments have been "if we didn't have the MS players, we would not field HS teams". So is is about true "freakish talent" moving up or supply and demand? I've come across few MS players of such talent that they deserve to play up. Not only that, what does it truly mean to someone when they get their HS letterman jacket and they are MS? Apples to oranges, hate to see a talented Sr. marked to win a state championship, let's say in a track event, only to be outdone by that freakish 8th grader that beat them. How's that feel to look back at your HS athletic carreer. That 8th grader has her whole HS ahead of her to be the best of the best, now they've taken away from someone else. That is not right. Same goes for those 5 spots on a Bball team. Colleges are looking to recruit at different years, if your loaded up with 8th graders and uderclassman, that upper classman gets passed up, no chance of scholarship money. I know, I know, that comes from AAU play but still. My freshman year Greg Ostertag was also a fresh. Waist to my chest high at 7'2. Was he talented or just big? He went pro, great shot blocker. Weight room ethics, very weak!, Was one of the weakest on team, not a hard worker in my mind. To me, he was the freak, could see playing HS as a MS player. He was from Texas so he did not. Those players are few and far between. It's about development, MS players are not at the same level. Your argument is about supply.

 

I see where you are going here but if that senior gets beat by an eighth grader........well then she gets beat by an eighth grader. Maybe the senior should have worked harder or maybe the eighth grader is just blessed with more talent. Either way She should shake her hand and congratulate the 8th grader on winning the event and move on. I think we get too caught up in things being "fair" all the time. Life's not fair. Get over it. All the coaches that I know want to win. They will play the girls that they feel are going to give them the best opportunity to do that. If that's a 7th or 8th grader then I have no problem with it. I will say that the player, parents and the coach need to be on the same page. Girls HS basketball is a different world than middle school. On the court and in the locker room.

If I'm not mistaken the girl all time scorer in ky played 5 or 6 years of varsity.

Your daughter's coach has more points than any girl or boy that has ever played high school basketball in the state of KY. She started varsity as a 7th graders...and yes, they count all her points. If she was good enough to play, they should count them. On the other hand of your argument, its not her fault Ohio only allows 4 varsity years.
