So those parents & young players need to keep that in the back of their heads, because they too will not be immune. Karma has a funny way of showing up & the player that played up as a MS could very well get bumped by younger talent just like they did when they bumped an upperclassman!!! If I'm gonna pay the money to watch a HS Varsity game, I'd prefer to watch a team of high schoolers. If I wanted to watch MS talent, I'd spend less money & take in a MS game...Same sport/same players/same talent just cheaper price of admission!!

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I was told moving a player up and only playing varsity was done on a gentlemans handshake. After reviewing KHSAA rules, it is clearly stated that it is a KRS that the principal approves any and all promotions. It also is clear that you can only have 5 years max eligibility at varsity level. If this is true, not sure why someone would forfeit their senior year....? Can anyone shed some light on this?

That strategy is a very real & common strategy used by coaches in more than one sport. Once a player has played at Varsity level (no matter what age), they are locked in to that school & unable to transfer without sitting out a full year. The exceptions would be change in address or fighting the matter with school board. In theory, a HS coach cannot "recruit" players from different schools & that would include MS, but we all know it happens. If this practice of snatching top MS talent to play up for that purpose continues to be allowed, before you know it we'll see freshmen forego their last 3 yrs of HS to play college or better yet have HS Draft selections!! Sounds extremely outrageous, but a few years ago so did seeing a 7th grader playing on a large school Varsity team!! Just another example of how politics ruin sports!! Whatever happened to letting the talent speak for itself?

 

I am not so sure that statement is 100% accurate. Kids are not considered High Schoolers until they walk the halls on their 1st day as a Freshman at the school they are enrolled in. So, even if schools move players up from the middle school that student could still choose whatever high school they wanted even if they have played varsity minutes. I really think the rule doesn't hold barrings until the student/athlete walks the halls as a freshman. So until that day they are free to change to any high school they want. Now, if they have a Freshman player that has sat the bench most of the season and they play them only a few minutes at the varsity level then that player is trapped and unable to change schools without sitting out a year. But I don't think that's the case for middle schoolers. Coaches are smart they know what they are doing. Again, I'm not certain b/c I know some rules changed for middle schoolers but I thought those rules were for age restrictions on playing at MS level and for playing up but I could be totally wrong.

I think the 5 years only start when you're in high school. Meaning that you could fail 1 year and still be eligible, but no more. I don't think any of the KHSAA rules prior to this year had any effect on MS kids. That is starting to change though.

Agree and another reason why the KHSAA rule of allowing MS players to play up is wrong. So then what's the point of allowing them to play up? So they can use that HS system, get better, work on skills, then say, see ya later...off to a better program, SMH!! MS players need to just stay in MS and wait their turn.

So, once a student becomes a Freshman they can only letter 4 years. But the reality is with the NEW MS rules in effect that only 7th and 8th can now play at Varsity level kids can play at Varsity level 6 yrs.

There are some MS that feed into more than one HS in Boone such at Ockerman and RA Jones, but it still goes by where you live, district map, regardless. Three is no student or parent choice in the matter period, unless that parent is a Boone County School employee, then they may have school choice by applying, regardless of where they live and meet the criteria of grades, attendance, behavior. Conner to Ryle to Cooper to Boone, doesn't matter....fact.

Jayhawk is correct. No student gets a choice of where they will go unless their parent works in the Boone County school system. So there would be no "coaches input" of what HS the kid will attend.
