October 15, 201411 yr FWIW, I don't support unemployed parents having 5 kids, but the notion that their income should dictate when you procreate is asinine in my opinion. I feel like many people can afford to have a child, yet don't put forth the care or effort required when becoming a parent. I know several wealthy people who are terrible parents and should never have had children. But because they can throw money at their children's problems they should be able too?
October 15, 201411 yr And crowd another employment area with too a surplus of workers? Sure thing. Let's get 10,000 plumbers out there when only 1,000 are needed. But hey! They know a trade! You are hilarious. Excuses is all I read. How does anyone have a job by this insane logic.

I never said people of a certain income shouldn't have kids. I said people who expect other people to support them should not have kids. I don't understand how that is so hard to grasp.

October 15, 201411 yr It's interesting, this thread. One shouldn't start a family until one can "afford" to. We want to make damn sure that no one gets any benefits, but we don't want to pay a minimum wage that allows them to cover their basic needs. What the hell does a person do if they make the "mistake" of having a family? No one's advocating more people on aid...they're advocating a minum wage that moves them OFF aid. What do they do if the make a mistake? Get educated in a trade and make a good life for them and their family. I know that such a harsh thing to consider...
October 15, 201411 yr I'm glad your girlfriends daughter has someone who cares to help her. What about another girl who doesn't? What is she to do? Or a young couple? The reality is there are people of all ages who have no one that either CAN or WILL help them. What of those people? Why don't you think they can make it by learning a trade of some kind? Why is it you think they're only capable of earning minimum wage the rest of their life? Maybe I just have more faith that people can do better if they want to.
October 15, 201411 yr So ppl who make minimum wage need to work more jobs and somehow go to school between those two jobs, and not have any children until they can afford to. Anything else to add?So, don't try to better yourself by learning a trade or profession, live in poverty and continue a vicious cycle. Anything else to add?
October 15, 201411 yr Goebbels, if he said that was just parroting what Mrs Sanger had said. Planned Parenthood Abortion centers opened way before the Nazis came to power. October 15, 201411 yr I'm glad your girlfriends daughter has someone who cares to help her. What about another girl who doesn't? What is she to do? Or a young couple? The reality is there are people of all ages who have no one that either CAN or WILL help them. What of those people? The point I was trying to make with that part of my post was...even though my GF's daughters situation is the exact opposite of what it should be to be having children and goes against all my philosophical beliefs (un-married, low education, unskilled, low paying job, etc) I still put myself in a situation to help them in every way I can. And I dearly love little Avery (the grand daughter). So even though you view conservatives with opinions much like mine almost as "heartless"...well, many/most of us aren't. We just want personal responsibility, accountability, and a modicum of thought used in big decisions...such as having children. Unfortunately that seems to be getting more and more rare. The problem I believe many of us have today with the way the welfare system works is...it has become a life style/entitlement for many many people who are more than capable of working and educating themselves. I have NO problem giving people a HAND UP in time of need. Lot's of good, hardworking people have times of struggle. And there are those, some by no fault of their own, that can't provide or take care of themselves. We as a people/nation have a responsibility to help those people. It's when some of the population...and some of them now 3rd and 4th generation...start to DEMAND government assistance as a way of living and it becomes nothing more than a monthly HANDOUT...that's when it's time to start re-evaluating who really needs assistance and who needs a swift kick in the pants.

What the hell does a person do if they make the "mistake" of having a family? No one's advocating more people on aid...they're advocating a minum wage that moves them OFF aid. What would that minimum wage be? What would be the effect of raising the current minimum wage earners to that rate? What would the effect be for other wage earners making more than that minimum? How would that then affect costs of goods and services? Assuming those goods and services increase in price due to this snowball effect on all wages, could those "new rate" minimum wage earners then cover their basic needs? If not, what's the next step? What about those who will lose their jobs due to an increase large enough to satisfy those advocating for a living wage? Rmom, I don't expect you to answer as you shouldn't know the answers, nor do I. I just ask them to illustrate the problems that will come from such a move. It always sounds good in theory but putting it into action is a bit tougher.
October 15, 201411 yr It becomes my business when they want the government to subsidize their poor decision making with my tax dollars or laws forcing business owners to pay more money than a position is worth. A position is worth whatever the employee can obtain through legal means, including collective bargaining. This notion that wages should be set by a bunch of allegedly altruistic business owners sounds like something that's popular in third-world countries.
October 15, 201411 yr What do they do if the make a mistake? Get educated in a trade and make a good life for them and their family. I know that such a harsh thing to consider... So, if they are working and going to school or learning a trade, it's OK if they receive aid?
October 15, 201411 yr So, if they are working and going to school or learning a trade, it's OK if they receive aid? I have no problem with that. Dated a lady in college who was in that exact situation. Single parent of a 10 yo and 6 yo receiving no help from the father, studying for a double major in computer science and business. Received some sort of living assistance, not sure what all it was, and qualified for school assistance as well. Now is successful and living in Chicago with a good job.
October 15, 201411 yr Because I'm a dumb Democrat. Your party has 100% of the solutions. When this is your response to Lipton Bash's quote that "people who expect other people to support them should not have kids. I don't understand how that is so hard to grasp.", you know you have lost the argument.
