October 14, 201411 yr One of Grimes's many points that I have issue with, is her claim that the government (I am assuming she is referring to the Federal Government) can help the state of Kentucky. I only saw bits and pieces of the debate, but what exactly does this mean? I understand it is a debate, and they are extremely limited on time, but "helping the state of Kentucky" could range from reducing EPA restrictions, enabling greater job growth, to strengthening EPA restrictions, promoting better health of Kentuckians; two completely different ideological standpoints. Aside from her vagueness, I don't understand how she thinks she is in a better position to help the state of Kentucky than McConnell is. McConnell is currently the Senate Minority leader, which could very easily turn into the Majority leader in the near future. With him as the Majority leader of the house, Kentucky is provided a great opportunity which would not be afforded in the unfortunate event that Grimes is elected. But with that said, if it all plays out in his favor, and KY is no better off than it is now, will he pull the "it's not my job" line?

October 14, 201411 yr Maybe I am missing something, but why do these have to be mutually exclusive? Or is there something else that I am just not getting? They are not mutually exclusive. But I think the 'long timers' value one over the other. Maybe its just McConnell's style but he has not been a vocal 'loyal opposition' on things. And with no real viable alternatives offered on some things (ACA) he opposition is more symbolic that substantive.

October 14, 201411 yr I am having a hard time discerning how, or why, you think that some long time politicians value being a statesman over a politician, or vice-versa. At least from my perspective, anyone who represents the state, and is willing to devote such a large portion of their lives for the betterment of our country, is a patriot in my eyes. However, I understand this is simply my opinion and you very well may have a differing one. In regard to the vocal opposition, or lack there of, by McConnell, I do not necessarily view this as a bad thing, especially given the climate of this election. By coming out and drawing a hard-line on certain "hot"issues, he alienates potential voters who are on the fence. If McConnell were to say, "well I undoubtedly oppose X, and will do everything I can to ensure that X will not happen," he alienates all people that are still unsure of whether X is a good idea, and loses them as potential votes. In a year when winning the election could have significant impacts, I do not fault him for not wanting to appear as hard-line, as some may desire.

This, to me, is just another indication that Grimes has no idea what she is doing, and is simply just trying to say what will get the most votes. I'm not sure if she just isn't aware of the effects of raising minimum wages, or if she is just intentionally ignorant. Raising minimum wage puts the burden on the employer forcing companies to hire less labor, thus creating larger unemployment and a larger poverty rate. She then says that she has a job plan, but her claim to raise minimum wage indicates that her job plan is to reduce the amount of available jobs? I think that Grimes realizes that she is over matched, and is counting on voters taking her words at face-value.
