I think some people are looking at Stoops and asking, "if he can get a program as historically bad as UK and a school where football has historically taken a back seat to basketball and get them in a position where it looks like they may eventually get out of the perennial bottom of the SEC, what could he do at a real football school like Michigan or Florida?" For so long people have accused UK of not taking football seriously and being hesitant to extend his contract and then losing him would almost cement that accusation. UK going ahead and extending his contract and taking his pay to a level that could be argued that he has not earned quite yet would do two things. 1) It either makes other schools decide to look elsewhere for their coach or makes it easier for Stoops to say no thank you and 2) it gives some assurance to kids looking at UK that Stoops will be there their entire college career should they decide to sign with UK. I agree. If UK wants to take football seriously, they are going to have to pay to keep a real football school from stealing their coach. If Michigan (or whoever) offers, and UK doesn't offer more, they reaffirm everyone's beliefs about UK and football.

I think they'll pay... but as we found out in Louisville, sometimes being willing to pay isn't enough. There are jobs that just speak for themselves.

If you offer to pay and they still leave, that isn't the school's fault. Matching or exceeding the offer would show people UK is finally serious about football, regardless if Stoops stays or goes.

I think in many cases a school cannot be reactive and offer more money after the big school that came knocking makes the big offer. The original school generally needs to be paying the larger salary already, ie be proactive.
October 9, 201411 yr If he didn't recruit Ohio so well, he wouldn't be considered for the job. I read he was a surprise candidate for Penn State. I love Stoops and what he has done for the program but I think if a big school comes calling, he will leave. If Stoops leaves, I expect Neal Brown to step in.

October 9, 201411 yr If Michigan is willing to Pony up 5 million a year based on an upset win over South Carolina, then that shows why Michigan been for the most part a dumpster fire since Rich Rod.

Does anyone think that David Brandon (renowned business man, incredibly average director of athletics) would talk to journalists about "his list", especially when it is a sitting coach (and he has a sitting coach)? People crack me up. If Hoke is fired, is Mark Stoops a likely person to be targeted? Sure. However, to think Brandon is running around telling people his plan borders on asinine. Does he have a list of 6-10 candidates for every revenue generating sport at Michigan in his desk? Sure. Is Stoops #1? Doubtful. Is he sharing that list with anyone outside of his most trusted circle? Absolutely not. Over the past few weeks, the chatter on most of the sports shows I listen to on my work commute is that Michigan is going to fire both Hoke and their AD. They want a new AD to pick the new coach. I would say that it's not a matter of "if" Hoke is fired, but more a matter of "when".

Do not say anything about tradition or stadium size, that is/was based on the past and recruits are not worried about that, what they see is playing in the cold. Look at the NFL and see where the qb's come from.

Also, at Michigan he is the main man on campus whereas at UK he will always be number two. Heck maybe even number three to an assistant coach LOL.
