I have a question when it comes to HS eligibility. Does Illinois have the same rule as Ohio? You can only play 4 years of HS ball, regardless of your grade?

Doesn't pertain to MS students. And if you go to the case law below, or what used to be there, it cited the rule pertains to anyone trying to circumvent ineligibility at another school by transfer to regain eligibility. As a matter of fact, that was the issue entirely when Elijah King transferred from Huntington HS to Fairview. He was ineligible (at HHS) at the time he transferred. They eventually got a letter stating otherwise and left the KHSAA out to dry on appeal, when all the while HHS just wanted it to go away.

How about we compare this to the Cole Von Handorf situation

 

Played at VMHS as an 8th grader with no intent of ever attending high school there because the school he now attends does not allow MS boys to play.

I have watched young Marquis for several years out on the national travel ball AAU circuit. About two years ago he reclassified, so like many he is a year older than many 8th graders who never repeated a grade. He is a really good young player, but I have also seen him play against other elite players from our own state who are now entering their freshmen season and we have multiple kids from our state that are more impacting players than Marquis. Is he good for being an 8th grader, absolutely yes. However, if he was attending a HS in almost any of the Jefferson County teams, he would not be a starting guard in my opinion. Again, I am not knocking his ability, I just think hyping the young man up as a OJ Mayo is way off base. He is not nearly as physical or athletic as OJ was as an 8th grade kid.

 

Coach Breeze will do well with him as he has a high BB IQ, but the worry that some out of town phenom is coming in to dominate the local scene seems more perception than reality to me. There probably is a connection as Coach Breeze did coach an elite 7th grade AAU team based out of Nashville, We All Can Go. I am sure they probably played against the AAU team from Chicago that young Marquis played with sometime during the Spring & Summer 2014 AAU season. I wish both Marquis and Coach Breeze success. Marquis and his family are very good people who are passionate about his basketball career so I can understand why they would make this move. Best of luck to them.

I had a feeling WACG All-Stars was part of the motivation in moving to a connecting state around Tennessee. Putting Marquise and Tyger Campbell together on one team will be tough to stop on the AAU curcuit next year. By the way, Tyger Campbell just happens to have transfer form Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Nashville last month to attend CPA. He is the #1 ranked player in the class of 2019.

Watching them both leads me to believe that had Tyger Campbell moved into the state to play there in lieu of CPA in Nashville, then it would have been a bigger impact. Against older kids Tyger has fared better in the elite events from what I have seen. I just think Marquis will have less immediate impact as an 8th grader but who knows down the road as to how dominating they will become. I just think we have some kids who are freshmen here in KY that are as good if not better than both. Grade wise they may be a grade older, but age wise they are the same. I have seen it with my own eyes and of course I am partial because I have an affinity for seeing Kentucky basketball get back on top again nationally but prefer it happens with home grown talent versus imports with no ties other than they tend to end up here for awhile.

I agree, Tyger would have caused a big impact if he were to have transferred to KY. I have not seen Marquise so I I'm not sure if he will be as dominant a player as some indicate or not. I will keep up with his progress though.

I wish the kid nothing but the best. I know the pressure that he and family are facing. In 1997 I became guardian over Anthony Grundy (rated 47 in country at time). Kids like this eat and sleep basketball. Marquise will have chance to make it because of his ranking and name. College level coaches will be all over him.

 

Anthony played his senior season at Central (even though I am a Purple!), I lived at the time right by Central. Anthony still struggles with his demons but is still playing pro ball today. He has had a great career playing the game.

 

Marquise will have lots of haters, believe me, I did. He will be glad of this move. Environment for some of these kids are so important. I remember Anthony's best friend being murdered. When I would take Anthony home, I would meet his family at a restaurant and not at their housing complex.

 

So, the kid will have lots of pressure but from where he came from the BG area will be like Disney World. He may not be the next LeBron but he can play the game. He will probably be playing for many more years.

 

I hope that the community of BG is good for him and to him. I for one like to see kids get out of a rough spot and make it. Good luck young man. There is more to life than round ball but while the ball is still bouncing, enjoy it!

It'll be interesting to see what the future holds.

Doesn't the KHSAA have a rule that if a student/athelete implies they are transferring to another school for athletic reasons that they will be ruled ineligible? I realize the KHSAA's rule is 9-12, but if an 8th grader is going to be playing on the high school team then that would make them be subject to KHSAA rules. Or at least I think it would.

Nice!!! Why South Warren? Why not Scott County or someone else?
