I'm going to buy a Suburban or an Excursion. Gas will be a pain but the ability to 'bump and run' on the interstates will come in handy.

No way this will ever hold up in court, if it ever makes it to production. You can't prove that I'M the one that was texting, number one. Number two, how do you know if it was an incoming or outgoing text message?

I record voice to text messages all the time. There is noway they will be able to enforce something like this in the court of law. I guess they will try.....

Something needs to be done. The texting while driving thing is out of control. Really ticks me off. People are clueless while driving.

Exactly voice texts and multiple passengers in a car makes it very hard.

Texting while driving is just the latest trendy thing to fight against. I suppose, eating, playing with the radio, putting on makeup, shaving (ive seen it), and anything else thats distracting is not as distracting as texting. As mentioned before, I text constantly from the road, but do so with my Android and never once have to "type" anything, its all voice. I can do this without ever taking my eyes off the road, and there is no way you will get me to stop this. I am on the road most days driving and get a lot of work done this way in between stops and different clients. Making laws just to be making laws and appear as if they're doing something. Overlegislating the people is getting really tiresome to me.

I understand what you're saying about other distractions being equally dangerous; however, the point remains that texting while driving is extremely dangerous & poses a significant safety threat to everyone.

1. About 6 times more likely to cause an accident than driving intoxicated

3. The #1 distraction for teen drivers.

4. Similar to driving blind for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, you travel approximately 100 yards in 5 seconds.

2. The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found that text messaging creates a crash risk 23x worse than driving while not distracted.

3. 11% of drivers between the ages of 18-20 who were involved in an automobile accident & survived admitted that they were sending and/or receiving texts when the wreck occurred.

4. In 2011, at least 23% of automobile accident involved the use of cell phones.

5. Teens who text while driving spend approximately 10% of their driving time outside of their own lane

I agree, im not fighting that, im simply saying there are far more dangerous things I see people doing behind the whell literally every day that are not legisltated and would never get someone pulled over yet texting will. While it may not be a "fad", it's still crazy that i can get pulled over for looking at my phone when its right in front of my face while my radio is a foot below the dash and comepletely takes my eyes off the road, yet that, perfectly legal.

1.6 million accidents and 11 teen deaths a day mean nothing to you. Texting is 25% of accidents, wouldn't that alone prove it is a very large portion of reasons behind all accidents.

The technology can differentiate between incoming and out going messages as they are on different frequencies or something like that.

 

As far as determining which car it is coming from, people used to say the same thing about Radar.

 

 

 

Texting while driving is dangerous, I'm glad that those chronic Driving Texters on here haven't been injured or caused someone else to be injured.

Worst thing I've seen over the years is passing someone on the interstate driving while reading a book...normally a woman in a small car with bumper stickers with her cruise set and sitting right in the middle lane. Looks up every 10-15 seconds to see what's happening on the road. I've probably saw this 30 times over the years.

In 1990 it was about 18 per 1,000. In 2000 it was about 15 per 1,000 and in 2012 it was about 11 per 1,000.
