Exactly. You don't lift bans for kids receiving money but you lift a ban when an entire institution covered up and turned a blind eye to kids being raped. I hope Penn St never wins a game in any sport ever again.

Good move. However I am sure USC is not happy about it because I believe their post season band and scholarship lost was longer and more severe for something that wasn't as bad as what happened at Penn State. Those USC players those years got punished and they had nothing to do with it.

I think there is little to no argument that the NCAA is grossly inconsistent. I, for one, have no problem with players doing what they can to profit from their names and their position in life while they are playing for the NCAA. Lord knows the schools they play for are, and the NCAA sure is.

 

All the same, I think this was the right move by the NCAA to end the sanctions, regardless of whether or not they have handled penalties correctly against other teams.

I agree that punishing the athletes doesn't seem fair, but at the same time part of the reason the rapes and abuse had been covered up was because of the clout and veneration of the football program there. I think the sanctions were meant to humble the school and program into reality and to a climate where this kind of thing couldn't occur again. Is there a way to do it that doesn't hurt the student-athletes?

Penn State has cleaned house. Those coaches and administrators are gone and many will likely never work again in those positions. Sandusky will never see the outside of a jail cell again. Paterno's had wins taken away, and his name will never be separated from those events. Those guys have been and will be punished for the rest of their lives. They are now on their 2nd coaching staff since the scandal. None of the coaches and players even remotely have anything to do with what happened. Don't continue to punish those who are trying to clean up the mess and make a new start.

Exactly why the sanctions should have been upheld. It's not just the school and administration. It's the culture.

This does not feel right to me. It is pitiful that the actions of a few can place such a horrendous cloud over a University and football program while also punishing those not affiliated with the situation, but that was how serious of a crime was being committed. Backing off the sanctions comes across as weak.

Paterno, while not reflected on the hierarchical chart, was the boss at PSU. He ignored it to protect Sandusky, himself, and the program.

If the current administration puts the statue back, then yes, I'd say "they" had learned nothing. I agree those students that gathered are knuckleheads. But JoePa, like it or was an institution, a cult of personality. It's hard to explain the hold he had/still has over that community, and it's going to take some time for that to disappear, if it ever does. But again, he's gone, his reputation forever damaged (at least in all areas not called Happy Valley). Punishing the current team doesn't do anything to change what happened, or how JoePa is viewed there.

That cult of personality was exactly the problem. Unfortunate that the team is being punished, but not one of them has to be there. That fan base and that university have and must pay the price for that sort of non-accountability.
