If you read Mark Story's piece about Howard Schnellenberger today, ol' Howard says the exact same thing I do. UK fans are satisfied with mediocrity in football. Always have been.
August 30, 201412 yr Sure you can play it that way. I think most would argue Kentucky hasn't had an architect of Coach Stoops caliber in quite some time either. No dog in this fight. I think there is validity to both sides of this discussion, but Rich Brooks was an architect and then some. Oregon has been mentioned, and we all know he was the one that got the ball rolling there.
August 30, 201412 yr Let's not go crowning the guy the next Bear Bryant here. Whatever recruiting gains they've made under Stoops, it remains to be seen whether it will result in any meaningful wins. He's got a lot of culture-changing to do. Culture changes don't happen overnight, have to take small steps and build confidence.

Doing things the same way UK always has clearly doesn't work. Newspaper guys all go to the Jerry Tipton School of Positive Thinking... It's not newspaper guys' job to be cheerleaders for the home team. It's their job to view all sides — the good, the bad, and the indifferent.

August 31, 201412 yr I agree that games against Teams like UT-M don't do a lot to help build UK, but this team was 2-10 the last two seasons. They aren't ready to schedule Notre Dame or Clemson to open the season. Howard and every coach in College Football schedules a couple of "Breather games" each season. UK has enough tough games in the SEC to make them better if better is what they are ever going to be. Georgia, So Carolina, Florida, Tennessee and then LSU or Auburn or Alabama or Texas A&M year in and year out would be a tougher 5 game schedule than any team not in the SEC plays. That's even with Florida and Tennessee not being up to historical levels right now.

But they would have to play home and home, I don't think either is willing to give up a pay day of a home game. Better mid majors on the schedule would be good. But face it, no one would have been shocked if today's game was 17-13 either.

That's even with Florida and Tennessee not being up to historical levels right now. I've said repeatedly in this thread and others that UK doesn't need to load up in that fashion. Just do better than what they always have. The "soft schedules" do them no good; a "medium schedule" is totally what UK needs. Like LRCW said, why not the Indianas of the world? Would do them far more good than trying to go from UT-Martin to Florida in a two week span. The shock of trying to climb 10 rungs on the ladder in competition would be much less extreme than getting a false sense of security that comes with drilling a crummy I-AA team. Plus, I think as things move toward the new era of the Big Five conferences, less and less of those teams will be playing cashbag games.
