Bowling Green 44 Mercer County 6

Purples overcome 1st half offensive woes. Next week should be interesting.

Senior DE Ben Holt played out of his mind tonight...I think he had six or seven sacks and I don't know how many more tackles for losses!! It was one of the most dominant defensive performances I've ever seen on the high school level! Of course, he was Defensive Player of the Game. Offensive Player of the Game went to junior RB Jacob Yates, who had a very productive night both catching passes and running the ball. What a burst of speed from this young man!

Next up for the Purples is a trip Friday to play host Lexington Catholic in the Bluegrass Bowl. They ripped Allen Co-Scottsville in the first game, as the game went to the running clock just moments into the second quarter. Here's hoping that the Purples can make it 46 in a row!

Sic 'em, Purple!!:dancingpa:dancingpa:dancingpa:dancingpa

BG ' S defense has always given every team problems. I just LC can rise to the occasion against the Purples. Should be the best game in the state this Friday...

I do not believe I have ever seen a better defensive game from a player as I saw with Holt last night. Granted, he may not have been up against the greatest competition but it was truly remarkable. He will have a great year.

Next week we will need to match our defensive effort to give us a shot. Catholic can smell victory. Interested to see how we respond in close game with all these new faces.

Lexington Catholic will be rocking Friday night.

It is FRIDAY night, the bowl was moved off of Saturday due to UK opener.

Two takeways from this game are that Mercer County is nowhere near as good as everyone expected and Bowling Green is a little better then expected after loosing so many Seniors. Ultimately Ben Holt and the Purle defense won this game for them. They allowed the Purples to play with a short field and wore Mercer Countys players down that go both ways. That is why the game was so close in the first half, but not the second. It will be interesting to see how they do against a much more formidable opponent in Lexington Catholic. Wish them the best of luck!

Not so fast! (My inner Corso) I think you are wrong about Mercer, basically all their offense was standing on the sidelines in street clothes, they knew it would be tough with all the backups playing in this game. With there starters healthy and able to play it keeps their offense on the field allowing their defense to rest. I think their defense is better than expected, holding BG to 39 yards in the first half. The defense was asked to carry the load last night and couldn't get off the field. If the starters were healthy this would have been an entirely different game........not saying they would have won but it would have been interesting.

The big takeaway for me this week is I am banking on Campbell Gott getting some confidence in the 2nd half of this game. Very important for next week. Unsure of BGs secondary, but we will know next week for sure. I don't look for Lex Cath to run the ball that much, just to keep BG honest.

Mercer County will be just fine. Rest and heal your starters and use this game to get ready for your district games. I wouldnt overlook them going forward.

Mercer was missing some key players but they would have likely worn down in the second half playing both ways as well. It would have been a different game but not that much different IMO.

I'm not saying I'm a soothsayer, but I did have it at 42-7 BG. Pretty close.

I am curious as to whether Mercer County was missing any players on the line. Because most of their troubles came about because they absolutely could not block some of the BG players, particularly Ben Holt.

Congrats in the opening season win.

A friend from Ohio was at this bowl game and he was giving me updates.
