August 8, 201412 yr "The network didn't kill us, but the hormones might." That seems to be the theme of Lifetime's upcoming TV movie The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story. According to the network, the movie "delves into the experiences of six unknown young actors placed into the Hollywood spotlight, exposing the challenges of growing up under public scrutiny while trying to maintain the squeaky clean image of their popular characters both on and off-screen." The first preview clip was released on Thursday, and in it, behind-the-scenes tension between stars of the hit '90s show is front and center as the Saved by the Bell cast shoots promotional images; the sequence is set to Bell Biv DeVoe's song "Poison." If the unauthorized story is to be believed, Lark Voorhies (who played Lisa Turtle on the sitcom) and Tiffani-Amber Thiessen (Kelly Kapowski) were not exactly BFFs offscreen. Voorhies gets snarky when she thinks that Theissen is getting too close to Mark-Paul Gosselaar (who played Zack Morris). "Can you believe her … why does she have to be so flirty?" Voorhies — as played by actress Taylor Russell McKenzie — tells Elizabeth Berkley (Supernatural star Tiera Skovbye plays the actress behind Jessie Spano). What ensues are passive-aggressive looks and pushing and shoving between the actresses while Berkley attempts to keep the peace. But don't think that only the ladies were guilty of stirring up the drama. Mario Lopez (who played A.C. Slater) and actor Dustin Diamond (Screech) engage in some not-so-friendly competition. Diamond's 2009 memoir, Behind the Bell, was a mostly negative portrayal of his experience on set. Lifetime has already stated that their movie is not based on his book but rather on hours of their own interviews with those connected to the show. Gosselaar stopped by Watch What Happens: Live this week, and although the original cast members were not involved in any way with the unauthorized TV movie, he hinted that a few of the tensions portrayed might not be off base. When Andy Cohen asked the actor if he'd rather work with Diamond again or watch his sex tape, his answer was quite telling. "I would love to watch that sex tape… if anybody has that tape, please bring it to me. I want to see it," Gosselaar replied. Not all cast members will be tuning into Lifetime's movie, which airs on Labor Day. "I am not really curious about it to tell you the truth," Berkley told Us Weekly. "We know the lives we led and it was so innocent. Our parents were on set with us every day and it was so innocent. It was such a different time so I have no idea… it's not our real journey on that show together. It was a really sweet time so I have no idea what it's going to be."
