I say no!

In this day is there anyone that doesn't know or hasn't heard a thousand times plus that smoking causes cancer?

I have sympathy for the family losing a loved one, but RJR IMO has no responsibility to pay them for the intentional actions of this man.

About a zero percent chance that award stands up on appeal... but it's hard to feel bad for the tobacco companies over the last 20 years when the chickens finally come home to roost on the previous half-century of deliberately misleading consumers about harmful effects.

About like me suing the fast food chains and the TV networks for causing my poor eating and lack of exercise for the last several years.

Yeah another article I read said the damages would be GREATLY reduced and even possibly eliminated.

I don't feel sorry for them, but for the last 30-40 years everyone has known the effects of smoking I don't see how the company could be liable for a man smoking over the last 20 years. The previous 50 had nothing to do with that.

Nothing illustrates the decline of this country better than the stupidity of so many juries. The odds of seating a jury that would vote in favor of penalizing any company responsible for a death to the tune of billions of dollars should be extremely slim but assembling a jury of idiots has become way to easy for ambulance chasing, slip and fall lawyers in this country. The lawyers who bring this type of lawsuit should be disbarred and judges who allow these outrageous cases to go to trial should be impeached, IMO.

Can you sue porn companies for carpal tunnel... I think not.:jump:

Shame on the judge, the lawyers and the plaintiffs. It is sad our legal system gets bogged down with such frivolous activity. Sounds like the Grisham novel, The Runaway Jury.

I have more sympathy for victims who are up there in years as they probably got hooked back when there might have still been some debate on the dangers. Those 60 or under have no excuse, they received plenty of warning.

Just throwing this out there; what about the people who develop cancer from secondhand smoke? Someone who has never smoked a day in their life yet develops lung cancer from being exposed to cigarette smoke nonstop. Does that person have a case?

If it can be proven, I would think so.

And for the record - raging liberal that I am - this ruling is preposterous.
