Should you have to pass a basic civics test to be able to vote?

Featured Replies

Does anyone think one side is less educated that the other? If not, wouldn't their uneducated votes cancel each other out?

According to a scientific survey I just conducted of posts on this site, it's a small miracle that the people who didn't vote for Mitt Romney manage to tie their shoes by themselves.

Well, since one of the more important things in life there's no test required, having kids and raising them to be decent people. I dare say a civics test to vote wouldn't work either. Might be a good idea for at least one.

Great Idea but won't and probably shouldn't happen.

I do not believe the Constitution forbids a "civic test". It does forbid a "poll tax", 24th A. You cannot be denied the right to vote based on color, sex or age by the 14th A, 19th A., 26th A.

The southern states once used poll taxes and literacy tests as qualifiers to vote. Why they did not include literacy tests in the 24th A., I do not have a reason for that. If I have missed something, please inform me which article, section, clause to check.

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 abolished both literacy tests and poll taxes. Would a civics test be seen by courts as a form of a literacy test? I would think so.

Hell, members of the House and Senate don't have a clue to what they are doing, so why should the electorate.

Perhaps we should revert back to only property-owning white males being eligible to vote. That would take care of things.

Don't forget about that pesky 19th Amendment. Need to repeal that.

Something interesting from this that was new news to me:

The key vote came on June 4, 1920, when the Senate approved the amendment by 56 to 25 after four hours of debate, during which Democratic Senators opposed to the amendment filibustered to prevent a roll call until their absent Senators could be protected by pairs. The Ayes included 36 (82%) Republicans and 20 (54%) Democrats. The Nays comprised 8 (18%) Republicans and 17 (46%) Democrats. The Nineteenth Amendment, which prohibited state or federal sex-based restrictions on voting, was ratified by sufficient states in 1920

Not unlike the Civil Rights bills of 60's the Dems were on the wrong side of history again....:lol2:

I believe 2 posters said a "civics (literacy) test" was against the Constitution. I pointed out that the Constitution does not prohibit such a test. As you pointed out the Voting Rights Act, a law, bans it.

I gave up shoes that tied years ago, except for hiking boots. I'm amazed each time I manage to tie them in under 2 minutes!

LBJ predicted that the Dixiecrat wing of the Democratic Party would leave the party after he signed key civil rights legislation in the mid '60s. This is indeed what happened. The Dixiecrats are now inside the Republican small tent. Your disingenuous post assumes that the platforms and principles of the Democratic and Republican parties have remained steadfast since the early 20th century. Not the case.

We've also seen a similar, significant decline of moderate Republicans in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states as the GOP extremists continue to move the GOP further to the right.

I spit out my water...I'm wearing flip flops right this minute...but only because I just walked into the house and haven't shucked them for my customary bare feet bet. :D
