Should you have to pass a basic civics test to be able to vote?

By the likes I received it looks like we have two willing participants.

I think we both have supreme confidence in our ability to absolutely obliterate the other.

I'm taking that snarky little kid down a peg or two...

If I could snap my fingers and make changes to the voting process...there would be far far far fewer than the approximately 207 million people eligible to vote in this country. And taking a basic civics test wouldn't be the end of it either. I have worked in a local voting precinct for the past several primary/general elections. What I see routinely is disturbing to say the least...and down right pathetic at it's worst.

Perhaps we should revert back to only property-owning white males being eligible to vote. That would take care of things.

I wasn't going to go that route, but it's along the lines of what I fear in this: why not just have a select group of smart, successful people handpick our leaders? Plutocracy is at the end of the slope, if a slope there be.

Can you elaborate?

No. Shouldn't ever happen.

Next question.

What about my idea ? Any tweaks you would make.

Can you elaborate?

Just how absolutely clueless and completely uninformed and apathetic many, many voters are. People don't know what they are registered as...don't know the difference between a primary and a general election...don't really care about anything as long as they can pull the D or the R straight ticket lever because by gosh that's what their pappy and grand pappy and great grand pappy did, and that's what they are gonna do, etc. etc. etc.

I can almost guarantee you that if you or anybody here worked a voting poll for a couple of elections, you would think the same as I do in that changes should be made. Might not agree o the changes specifically, but would agree that something should be done in some way.

With all I said above...working the polls has actually made me more knowledgeable and I am glad that I have and will continue to do it. It's just somewhat depressing to see some of the stuff that goes on.

I do not believe the Constitution forbids a "civic test". It does forbid a "poll tax", 24th A. You cannot be denied the right to vote based on color, sex or age by the 14th A, 19th A., 26th A.

The southern states once used poll taxes and literacy tests as qualifiers to vote. Why they did not include literacy tests in the 24th A., I do not have a reason for that. If I have missed something, please inform me which article, section, clause to check.

This right here. I can't even believe people support the idea of only allowing certain people to vote. The conservatives are right we are losing our country on a daily basis.

I am surprised that you are saying that it is the liberals who are "uneducated". The opening post questioned "uneducated voters", no reference to liberal or conservative. Yet, the first group you think of as "uneducated" are those on the left. Once again, very surprised.

Is that what he is saying? I got something different from his post.
