July 25, 201412 yr In 1971 the Reds were coming off a 100+ win season and had made it to the World Series. They fell apart and had a losing record. Injuries to Tolan and pitching, coupled with a bad season from regulars like Bench and company made many want to wreck the team and start over. Instead they made a key trade: Two great players (Lee May and Helms) for Joe Morgan and Jack Billingham and Geronimo. The rest is history. Don't blow it up. Tweak it. You are right but I believe 1970 was the year they won a 100 then got beat by Brooks Robinson in the World Series. 1971 was an injury plagued year. Then the big trade and back to the series in 72 only to get beat in 7 by the A's. Bob Howsam stepped up made that trade and the rest was certainly history. The Big Red Machine had arrived !

I'm a huge Reds fan as most of you know, but I'd rather they start trading some pieces than adding payroll and either one of those guys. I'd rather sell a couple pieces for the future.

I'd rather sell a couple pieces for the future. Agree with all 3 of you. If they had Votto and BP I'd be all for Byrd or Zobrist. If they had one I'd be in for both. They aren't making the playoffs with both of them right now. I'll be shocked if Latos, Bailey and Simon don't miss at least 5 starts combined the rest of the way.
July 25, 201412 yr It's pure comedy that you think I don't understand the statistics of the game. But you keep thinking that way. You get some of the stats. You don't get some. Probably like all of us. There is no doubt the Cards didn't think Walt would adjust to saber stats and he would continue to kill the depth of the farm system. He's gone and the Cards are in a much better spot than when he left and a much better spot for the next 3-5 years than the Reds. It's hard to argue though that he wasn't hugely successful there and really successful here. He went for it here and missed. I'm glad he did though b/c they had chances. Just not sure they will again after next year without moving some pieces really soon.
