July 24, 201412 yr And just like the Bengals and PBS, GABP will be full this weekend for the Reds. Huge difference in the Bengals owner and Reds owner. Not even on the same planet.
July 24, 201412 yr Huge difference in the Bengals owner and Reds owner. Not even on the same planet. You're right, one has admitted his failings and gotten out of the way of on-the-field decisions, and his team has won consistently for the last few years (and has the roster in place to keep winning). The other is a fan first, has signed off on a couple of emotional contracts, and continues to meddle in on-the-field decisions, and his organization is fundamentally broken to the point that the future looks bleak. You were absolutely right. :jump:

Did Bob Castellini go to Walt and tell him he needed to sign BP to that extension or did Walt go to Bob with a proposed contract and Bob agreed to it? And I'm sure you're not just talking about BP's contract so is it the same with the other questionable contracts?

Mr. C is the biggest Reds' fan in Cincinnati, which is both a blessing and a curse.

July 24, 201412 yr So basically Walt is a puppet GM? I don't believe so. Mr. C has the final word but he leans on the suggestions from the staff and Walt.
July 24, 201412 yr Walt has been average at best in his time in Cincinnati. Time for a change IMO. If the Reds are done, and I believe they are, they need to explore trading a big name or two for some organizational help for the next couple seasons and give Negron, Lutz, and Soto everyday playing time. See if any of them are ML roster worthy. Shut down both BP and Votto for the season. No use having them try to come back and never get fully healthy.

The two closers that have been traded so far have brought back a ton too. I would trade Chapman in a nano second to make this team better for the future rather than trying to get Byrd. It would be tough to make the playoffs with Byrd and a healthy BP and Votto starting tomorrow b/c of the Bailey and Latos uncertainty and we know Simon will regress.
July 24, 201412 yr So basically Walt is a puppet GM? No. He respects Walt and wanted him because of his track-record, but at the end of the day, if Mr. C feels strongly about something, it happens. Likewise, if Phil C feels strongly about something, it happens.

July 24, 201412 yr He hasn't arrived yet, so there's all kinds of time for mishaps. ...especially when those mishaps only take a couple seconds.
July 24, 201412 yr In 1971 the Reds were coming off a 100+ win season and had made it to the World Series. They fell apart and had a losing record. Injuries to Tolan and pitching, coupled with a bad season from regulars like Bench and company made many want to wreck the team and start over. Instead they made a key trade: Two great players (Lee May and Helms) for Joe Morgan and Jack Billingham and Geronimo. The rest is history. Don't blow it up. Tweak it.
