July 22, 201412 yr I think the difference, fair it not, is that we expect more from Votto because of what he is capable of. With Bruce we just seem to be happy to get a hot streak once every couple of weeks. He's never going to hit for average, you just hope he drives in enough runs to deserve to be in the line up.

While in the grand scheme I certainly agree with you, he made two of the worst defensive plays I've seen from a RF this year in Yankee Stadium. Again, not to diminish the fact that he has a big arm and has been a plus defender, but he was really bad at Derek's House this weekend.

However, if one of those was the 9th inning loser, I think he (and I) thought Frazier had that thing. Barnum and Bailey would have been proud.

July 22, 201412 yr ..... Why is he getting a pass from the fans? If Votto was healthy and putting up Bruce-like numbers, he would be getting KILLED. Bruce is making $10,000,000 (and $12,000,000 the next two years), hitting .221 with an on-base number of .302 and an OBPS of .695?! He is on pace for 16 home runs and 67 rbi. On a team starved for offense, and on a team missing two of their big three offensive players, he is shrinking right before our eyes. Add to the fact that he dropped a fly-ball in NYC and should have called off and caught the game loser on Sunday, combined with going 0 for 9 with 5k's during that series.....where is the outrage? He is 27, should be entering the prime of his career, and he is atrocious this year. I can't imagine the Votto-bashing, crazy theories, and silly arguments on pitch selectivity if our Canadian First Basemen was having this kind of a season and healthy. Sounds like a classic Seinfeld episode...
July 23, 201412 yr Well, I'll attempt to give it a stab. If MTGL's question was generic, or a fleece of the fans here on this site, I suppose my answer would be different. First, perhaps I give the fans on this site too much credit, however, I think we all know that Bruce will have long spells of awful, followed by long spells of outstanding. Over the course of the season it depends on which valley or peak he's on to determine the pulse of the fan base. Frankly, I'll wait until this season is over to pass judgement on him considering his value can't be judged on a steady line of consistency. His chart resembles an EKG. As to the Votto bashing, considering his slope since his contract, how in the world can you not consider him :poop::poop: so far? Sure Bruce has stunk it up. I have a feeling his numbers by season's end won't look much different than they normally do. Perhaps injuries may make them slightly less. This is exactly what the thread said. You defend Bruce and bash Votto. Why? When Votto has been able to play he has been far more productive than Bruce. Remember. Bruce was the first round pick that was to save the franchise. A five tool guy that could do it all. Votto happened to come along at the same time, with a whole lot less fanfare, and happens to be the better player. I like Bruce, but I will say that he has not progressed to the point that was expected. If Votto's production is :poop::poop: and it is still better than Bruce's production, how can you defend Bruce
July 23, 201412 yr ^ If only he could play every game at Coors. Hitting .225 on the road. His OBP is 20 points higher than Hamilton and his career OBP is almost identical to Hamilton's this season. If you're going to hit a guy with speed but a negative OBP lead off why not hit one second too. Steal every base that you can, play great defense in the outfield and hope that your run producers go yard when they do get on base? It would be better than hitting Cozart second.
