1. The Male team in '02 was unbelievable. I was a sophomore in HS and I was talking with my Dad about the game and told him Male would win because of they had the best player on the field in Michael Bush.

 

2. 2005 St. X. That game was a shocker. An X team that had dominated during the regular season and seemed to play like they had already won the game after they scored on their opening drive.

 

3. Toss up between 2007 and 2008 X teams. Comments can be made about what happened and why X was not able to knock off the Rocks in the playoffs, but at the end of the day... it is tough to beat a good team 2 times in one season. Especially a team that knows you almost as well as you know yourself.

 

 

The 2007 one should be more surprising. Trinity had a bunch of injuries to the O-line in the regular season game in 2008. When they were complete the smacked X hard in the first half of the playoffs. Only reason the playoff game ended close was that Trinity has like 3 or 4 turnovers in the red zone. If not for that it would have been a really rough night for X.

The 2003 team was the last truly great Warren Central team, but as good as they were, they are behind the teams of the late 80s and early 90s. And I certainly wouldn't rate them as one of the best to not win the title. They didn't even lose to the 2003 champion after all. That's not to slight that team - they were awesome.

86 team has to be right there. I'd take either over the 94 team. And the 94 team was very good.

Boone had some good chances, but the best was in 87.

The biggest shocker is Boone never winning a championship. State runner ups in 86', 87', 92', and 94'. They made it to the semi finals also in 83', 88', 89', 90', 93', and 97'. They might have thrown 20 passes in all of those games combined.

The hat-tipping incident came in the 2009 6A game after X scored a late td on a fake field goal. Scoring late is fine, it was the Rocks' job to stop them, but Glaser then tipped his cap to the Trinity bench and fans. I never understood that. Hard to figure what he was trying to say. Just not right. Glaser then ripped off 6 straight losses to Trinity in 2010, 2011, 2012, the last of the 6 putting the Rocks ahead in the series for the first time ever. The Rocks' 2013 win gave them the series lead by two.

The biggest shocker is Boone never winning a championship. State runner ups in 86', 87', 92', and 94'. They made it to the semi finals also in 83', 88', 89', 90', 93', and 97'. They might have thrown 20 passes in all of those games combined.

That may be the reason they never won: predictability. In 94 Trinity's D line knew Shaun was coming their way and in the second half pancaked to block the running lanes & let the linebackers stop him. That was Dennis Lampley's strategy to enable his not so great Rocks to beat a great runner with a great line. In the second half, Shaun had more running attempts than yards. Sidebar: in that 21-7 Trinity win, Rob Bironas (now of Tennessee Titans) attempted 3 field goals, one a chip shot, and missed all three.

I saw the 2002 shootout between Trinity & Male & still can't understand how Trinity beat that Male talent, Brohm or no Brohm. I have since watched my dvd & still can't figure it out. Google and you'll find it on youtube. Male had that big O & D line, were fast, & had true D1 talent. If anything, it was that Male 9-in-the-box defense that Brohm exploited. Unreal. The 2006 Trinity-Male game was also a stunner: Male was super-loaded with talent, I don't think Trinity could match them there, yet little Tim Phillips popped some long ones & Nick Petrino had some great targets. But Trinity never should have beaten Male, based on talent. It was coaching & a last-second maneuver by the Trinity safety coming up on the Male QB at the 1 in the last .06 secs that capped it.

Wow!!! His chance to really brag about his boys being the 2nd best in 6A and a chance to gain some respect and he is nowhere to be found.

 

Probably bragging about a Frosh Championship or the 8 D1 prospects on the O Line or something...LOL

I know I'm late to the Thread but I would I have to say 2008 St X Tiger lead by Duece Finch. That team creamed every team in it's path by 3 tds or more including Trinity until the rematch in the in the 4th round of the Payoffs when Trinity pull off the upsets winning 28-21. I still can't believe X got beat in that one. Trinity came out on fire building a 21-0 late 1st half lead before X finally got on the board making the score 21-7. At that point I still felt X would win after getting out to such a slow start but with under a minute left before half time just when it looked like X had the momentum going into half time, Tim Phillops did the Tigers in racing for a 75 yard td. That play was the play of the game because even thought X had the better team I knew the odds were against them coming back from 3 scores with only a half remaining against a well Coached Trinity Team. The Tigers completely Shut Trinity down the 2nd half but that Tim Phillips 75 td before Half time proved to be too much to over come as Trinity by the skin of their teeth won 28-21. Before the X lost to Trinity Max Prep had X ranked 12th in the nation & even after the loss X still finish 27th in the nation. Everyone knows Trinity had no bussiness beating X that year.

I was at that game and Trinity from the opening kick off played with a "nothing to lose" attitude. X looked nervous and seemed to be caught in the moment. That '08 team was really good, but T was not far behind them. From an X stand point, I would have to put the '05 team the best X team not to win a championship because they truly looked like a college team upfront, and in '05 T really was not as close to X as they were in '07 and '08.

That 05 Trinity team is underrated IMO. They started to put it together after X thumped them in the regular season. If I recall correctly, T beat the teams on the last half of their schedule very decisively but no one outside the Trinity family was paying much attention. The team had a lot of talent in the character department. They resolved not to be embarrassed again and they weren't, thanks to senior leadership and exccellent coaching.
