July 13, 201412 yr It was a dumb move to send the runner because he was out. If he scores people would be saying they love the aggressiveness. If he held the runner at third and Didn't score, it would be a dumb move because he would of been safe by a mile. Price said, before the year, that they were going to be more aggressive this year. After watching this team leave runners in scoring position with less than two outs game after game. I think I would would of tried to score Big pasta or Jumbo. I would rather them be aggressive than have to rely on Ludwick and Pena to make contact. Now if we were a great hitting team with RISP then I say hold him at 3rd.

If Santiago were on 3rd with no outs, Bruce hit a fly to Polanco and he catches the ball where he picked up the hit, do you send Santiago? That is virtually the situation on the decision to send him last night. He was at 3rd base when Polanco caught the ball, so would you have sent him if it were a sac fly with Santiago on 3rd?
July 13, 201412 yr I'm still trying to figure out why they didn't work around McCutchen in the 12th. They didn't have to walk him, but a belt high meatball isn't really optimal in that situation
July 13, 201412 yr Agree - don't send the runner. I would have bunted Bruce (but if it is MY team, every player would know how to bunt or they wouldn't be playing, so that assumes a longer term approach). Yes, it takes the bat out of Meso's hands, but it also takes the inning-crushing DP out of play. It also brings the suicide squeeze into play with Ludwick (see above), particularly from a fastball throwing LHP that cannot afford to walk Ludwick with the bases loaded. I think this is a contradiction. You say don't send the runner, but you also say you would bunted Bruce. With Santiago out at the plate, you end up with the exact same situation as if you bunted Bruce - 2nd and 3rd with one out. So why would you have not sent the runner?

It all depends on where the ball is hit, if it's a ball where he has to back up to and can't get his momentum coming home then yeah. But if the ball is hit and he can get his momentum coming home then heck no. Last night Polanco was coming in at full speed and could get everything behind it.

Decisions are made at 2 different times. With the bunt, I am willing to take bases loaded & 1 out w/ Ludwick at the plate BEFORE Bruce puts the ball in play. Eliminates the DP. Eliminates the K that doesn't move the runners anywhere. With sending the runner, there is now a new option available to me -- bases loaded, Meso at the plate and 0 outs and the infield in!!! I like that option.
