Bishop Brossart Hires New Football Coach

Then why continue to operate a sport that ranks 3rd or 4th in the school?

Without a major culture change they probably shouldn't.

Almost every team that they will play has kids predominately going both ways. It's not like they have huge schools on their schedule.

If you would have witnessed their 2A games it is flat out ugly. I believe every game last year was a running clock. Sure those 2A teams have kids that play both ways when they are playing equal or better competition but they do not have to do that against Brossart. Brossart had basically no choice when you finish the season with 18 players

Seriously? High level athlete on a team with less than 20 members means you are going to be on the field an awful lot (likely playing both ways) playing teams that are a lot deeper. You are going to be beat up physically and possibly injured at some point. If basketball is your primary sport you are going to miss some practice time. You will take longer to get your "basketball legs" or "baseball arm or swing" back.

I see zero impact on baseball. Basketball, I could see some impact because you will miss practice time getting ready for the season. Basketball players are the only ones who are giving something up to play football.

Go back and look at last year again. Looking at the scores, there are two games that might have been running clock games. Newport, Lloyd and yes, even NCC, were not running clock games. I look at last year's results and I start to think Teegarden was doing a decent job - 3 wins and only couple total blowouts. It is a shame he apparently wasn't clicking within the school and with the players.

I would think the losses to Holy Cross 51 - 12 (HC only win of the season), Newport 40 - 0, to NCC 41 - 0 and Gallatin 49 - 14 were all running clock games.

It's going to take much more than just a coach. They need a school community "buy-in" and maybe that can happen when they go back to 1A.

This kills me! Kids aren't playing because they don't want to risk their other sport??? Does Brossart have multiple D1 prospects (in other sports) roaming the halls that aren't playing football? Because outside of that, there is no reason not to play a sport that you don't consider your main sport. Not but just a few years ago, all kids (except at very large schools) played both ways. And if you're an athlete, don't you want to be on the field??? Seems like if you liked football, it would be an ideal place to play at this point. If you're an athlete, you'd never leave the field! How cool would that be? Injury? You can turn your ankle walking down steps at home. Does that mean you just stay in your room all the time? And saying that it may mess up your other sport assumes that you feel you have a chance at a very nice scholarship. Here's where the new culture and parent's way of thinking is damaging in this day and age. EVERYONE feels their kid is scholarship material. That's great to push kids to be their best. But don't go as far to push them to the level that it's all they think about. High school and High school sports should be fun and part of the experience and unless that kid is being drafted in the first round of baseball or going major D1 in some other sport, that kid should be having fun and enjoying playing whatever he wants. We brainwash our kids today to think they all have a shot if they just work hard and focus on their one thing. In reality, it's probably about 2% of those kids that should really be one sport focused. Give me a break! If you like football, you should play. Regardless of anything else.

RCC, is it all about going D1? I know of a former QB that may want to play another sport in D2 or D3. He wanted to eliminate his chances of being hurt. plus he plays baseball all summer long, not allowing him to do the summer football workouts.

Okay, that's one guy. However, I would question if this kid really liked playing football, why did he quit? To not get hurt for what? I'd ask what year this kid is too. Are we seeing a large number of kids get hurt and missing opportunities to play other sports? I played baseball all summer and found a way to play football. And at Brossart, I bet they'd let an athlete of that caliber do both just to have him when they need him. Bottom line, if the kid enjoys playing the sport, he should play it. It's high school. We have evolved into a community that looks at this stuff too serious. It's not a job. It's supposed to be fun. If he really enjoys football and doesn't play in fear of losing out on a possible d2 or d3 assistance for college, then IMO, he will regret not playing the football. He will wish he didn't isolate it. Just my opinion.

Sep 26, 13 Holy Cross (Covington) at Scott (L) 12 - 51

Oct 4, 13 Newport away (L) 0 - 40

Oct 11, 13 Lloyd Memorial away (L) 7 - 33

Oct 19, 13 Newport Central Catholic home (L) 0 - 41

Three of the four were running clocks. I believe Newport and NCC final scores were the halftime scores. Holy Cross RB I think had 6 TDs in first half and I don't think he was ever tackled.

I don't think we are talking about guys who played football at one time or liked football and gave it for another primary sport. We are talking about guys who are good athletes and have a primary sport who COULD help the football program succeed if they CHOSE to play. That is a big difference.

My take is if a kid is a 6'3" 185 Junior and maybe he is already in the top 8 rotation for basketball and has a chance of starting at small forward for Brossart because he can run all day and has a nice jumper and can hold his own on the boards...........sure he could really help the football team but I can see why that kid would want to be putting in as much work as he could for basketball.

I see what you're saying. But if he actually likes football, why not play football? If he has never played football, then he most likely doesn't have interest in playing. But that would be the same at any school. Heck there are some tremendous athletes at HHS that don't play football.

That is the problem. There aren't many that like football and there never were. At Brossart, basketball and soccer and baseball and track and cross country all had established successful programs. Not a lot of those kids are wanting to play football in addition to their sport.

I was thinking the running clock started at 45 points. They changed that last year didn't they.

Running clock starts at 36 now I think.

It was two exciting years for the program, especially after going 0-20 the first two varisty years. It wasnt an arrogance it was more hopefullness that they were heading in the right direction. The walton program was started the right way from the bottom up and i think that is one reason for their success. Where as brossart started from the top down and has hit a major speed bump.

As for 2A i wont blame the down turn on that alone but a brand new program like that the move to 2A knocked the wind out of the progam in a way. Our boys who were on the fence about playing football, seeing that the level of competion made a dramatic jump got scared and didnt play.

Its not a dramatic jump in competition when the move in 2A only realistically created 2 tougher games a year for them than what they were already playing in the 1A district.
