The single greatest influence on the "media" isn't politics, it's big business, in the form of major advertisers. So if there are three middle or left alternatives to Fox News, it isn't because of a particular political persuasion, it's a result of advertisers seeking the widest audience possible. Supply and demand.

You think media coverage of today's politics is fair and balanced ? "The media" today is anything you want it to be. Fifty years ago one's options were limited. Not so today. One can dial up any flavor one desires. Group e-mails are part of "the media." So is BGP. To answer your question, "fair and balanced" is going the way of the Model T. If one wants to attract viewers/readers, middle of the road doesn't work. That's why Fox News and Huffington Post both are successful.

Buckley and John Kenneth Galbraith used to debate the issues of the day intelligently and respectfully on "Firing Line." Now Sean Hannity asks a 45-second question and screams at his interview subject to give him a yes or no answer.

He and Gore Vidal used to get into some real stingers. But they're all awful... and only getting worse. Even the print guys have become intolerable. I used to really like reading George Will, but he's gone absolutely off the deep end in the last few years. In the end, you have to know how you feel about certain things from the perspective of a personal political philosophy then consume as much news as possible and try to sift through it to figure out what matters to you. It's not easy to be a consumer of news... maybe it never has been and we've only figured it out because it's gotten louder.

I think it is OK for political commentators to every once in a while get upset and loud but I agree with you and others, now it is pretty much a daily occurrence and it is getting old. I can't even listen to Mark Levin and I cannot understand how anyone can even if they agreed with 100% of his views. His constant outbursts with that high pitched voice of his resembles finger nails going down a chalk board.

A friend's grandson went to China to study for a semester last fall. He was ready to jump in to spend some time in a country he thought was the model country for the future. He came back to the states totally disillusioned by what he saw and experienced in China.

I cannot think of a Dem or Repub who would envy China.
