Top 10, no way. I logged the first vote in the poll and started the whole thread, of course I think they'll be ranked in the Top 50 at some point, and according to the schedule, maybe even Top 25.

 

A lot of what we really need to know about them cracking the Top 25 is still in flux though. You have to reserve 5-10 spots in the Top 25 for your Oak Hills, Findlays, Monteverdes, Mater Deis, etc., etc. I do think they can fall somewhere as high as the low 25's depending on what they end up having, how strong the other teams are, and whether or not they lose at an opportune time.

 

Because of the population of the State and the way our districts are set up (guaranteed district games for seeding where a school like Ballard has two against a Kentucky Country Day), it's a little harder for our schools to be ranked.

 

 

If I'm speculating, I think they most need:

 

• Spalding needs to perform well in a head-to-head matchup with another D1 level prospect. He needs to look the part of a star for a Top 25-50 team in the nation; the supporting cast helps, but if he looks like "the man" who'll be a nice addition to Pitino's recruiting class, his high school team's ranking shoots up because there just aren't many schools with a kid like him and then another lower D1 like the Point Guard.
   
  
• At least one nice performances in some games against one or two quality teams across the river in Indiana (like their matchup with Jeffersonville in '13)... that's huge for perception.
   
  
• A really, really good showing in the King of the Bluegrass against in-state competition and a bracket that lets them play a top out of state team and take care of business in their backyard. Cannot slip up there.
   
  
• Win some games and look good in a their other holiday tournament (the "bigger" one that, no offense to the King of the Bluegrass because it's great, but one that might have a little more sizzle)...
  

 

I'm thinking like maybe:

visit me for the Whataburger in Texas like they did in '11,

the City of Palms in Florida (I think that's it) in '12, or

the StopDWI in Binghamton, NY like they did in '13

 

 

 

A tournament of that caliber and a strong performance in it ultimately determines how high they can rise.

 

A loss to someone who isn't Top 15 in the King of the Bluegrass and in their own backyard will be hard to overcome.

 

Same would be said for a slip-up against someone like a Waggener or Covington Catholic who just catches them on an off-night and gets hot themselves.

Not sure if they will be nationally ranked but if they can find a quality out of state opponent at some point this year and defeat them then I will say yes.

Fairdale's 90 and 91 teams with Brown, Morris and Turner were nationally ranked in USA Today.

 

What a squad, those guys were phenomenal. If not for a terrible night from the field by Anthony Hughes, Holmes fell just shy of beating that squad. Both Bulldog squads were great.

Call me skeptical, but I've seen far too many kids with the size and skill of Spaulding get vastly overrated simply because the motor isn't there. He's got a lot of work to do before I consider him a top 50-75 level prospect...

I wonder how many of you folks look at the high school ranking polls. Have you ever really looked at the rosters and at the schedules?

 

I not only look at the polls but also study the top teams/coaches from each state and attend the City of Palms Tourney (normally the top rated tourney in the country) each year. I think a top 50 ranking in some of the national polls pre-season is a legit possibility, and like I said depending on their schedule & depending on the outcome of that schedule will decide whether they move up to top 25 or higher status. I don't think top 25 is super likely much less top 10, but if they play in some big time tourneys and shootouts and come out w/only 1 or 2 losses then who knows. How high did Ballard start out or get last year in some polls last year?

That will help them more with a national ranking than the KOB. Nothing against the KOB by any means, but normally the COP has at least 6 of the top 10 teams in the country and a 3-1 showing or sometimes even a 2-2 showing can help your ranking, depending on who your losses are to and how competitive you were in those losses.

Look no farther than 500 plus transferring from D1 schools every year now. The guys offering the scholarships get it wrong all the time.

We will see. I know a lot better than you in regards to Spalding. You'll become a believer soon enough,I can promise you that.
